This is good book if you are in Cape Town itself and its immediate surrounding areas.. but if you are travelling further afield on the garden route I found it a little thin on the ground. This might sound picky, but it does state on the cover that it covers the Garden Route. Rather too many pictures and whole sections dedicated to "sport and fitness" and "gay and lesbian", and three quarters of this book seems to be dedicated just to Cape Town itself. If you travelling to Cape Town and then plan on exploring the entire Western Cape and want to buy just one book to cover everything, then the "rough guide" (see my review) is far better as an informative travel companion in my opinion.

As with all Eyewitness Guides, the multitude of glossy colour photographs are a real selling point of this guide. It's very helpful for pre-departure planning. The maps are good and integrate well with the text. There are also close up double page spreads focussing on the main sights, highlighting the best bits and mentioning the rest too.

The guide focusses on the sights, and achieves a good balance between showing highlights and 'best ofs' to help a time-poor traveller choose their itinary, while still showing the less famous attractions the city has to offer.

There is also information on places to eat and sleep, general cultural information, and practial information, plus a phrasebook. I found this section informative ... Read More:

How? Because when you buy this latest edition of British Bed & Breakfast (from the unbeatable 'Special Places to Stay' range), you will never be left with the nagging doubt that you should have chosen somewhere else to stay for those precious nights away. Its 684 entries cover England, Scotland and Wales and offer a vast choice, many of which would beat a four star hotel when it comes to standard of accommodation and food.
I speak from experience!
Aside from a colour picture and an inviting description with facilities guide of each place, the book itself offers various quick and useful reference indices.
One more feature to highlight is the 'ethical collection' where owners have had to complete a questionnaire which is then rigorously ... Read More:

This book is truly great. The information on inter-country travelling is superb - not given in as much detail in any other book I've found. There are so many maps that have been kept despite the serious editing that has made the book so relatively small. Accommodation descriptions and prices always accurate, and so good on local transport. A great book for the budget traveller!

You will love this book when it arrives. It is great to look at and involving to read, but the problems arise when you actually come to use it as a camping guide. The accounts are too subjective and seem to be based on a very particular and personal takes on the sites. Those at Arisaig for example are talked up as the amongst the finest in Scotland. When we were there they were crowded out with motorhomes running generators and the sunsets were somewhat spoiled by the portable television aerials. There was no room left for tents. There were other sites in the area which were not mentioned, but which did have room for tents and which seemed to be at least as good as though in the guide. I have no idea how or why the selections were made. And why no sites on the ... Read More:

288.New Europe by: Michael Palin

Travel : New Europe
Michael Palin is cool. I really like him. A lot of people find him a bit too eager to play the fool but this is nonsense because he's just great. Anyway what do you expect from a member of the Python team?

This book is a very enjoyable journey through the former Soviet bloc countries of Eastern Europe. If you watch the accompanying TV series at the same time then it becomes even more enjoyable as the book contains material that the TV programme doesn't and vice versa.

On the one hand this book is really rather superficial. You never really get to know a great deal about any of the countries that Palin visits. This is made up for by some of the interesting places he goes to and people he meets. If you are after a detailed description of ... Read More:

Invaluable, had information even the locals we were staying with didn't know: and was so good they asked if they could have it after we left Istanbul. Didn't leave my side the whole time. Isaw this thing in the hands of so many tourists in several different languages, especially on the Bosphorus trip. The maps were very useful for us and so should be for most, provided you know how to read a map. Forget contact lenses and emergency money; if you only bring one thing with you make it this travel guide.

I usually travel with LP so maybe I am a little biased but I did find this book up to their normally high standards.

The legendary confusion of Venice's allyways meant I was wary of this book's maps (esp considering LP's less than perfect record in that regard). However I was pleasantly surprised and in 4 days in the city did not get lost using them. It was a little annoying the way they were split across several pages but i guess that was necessary to acheive the accuracy.

The tips to the sights and the walking tours were exellent. The restaurant and shopping sections were ok. I cant comment on the hotels section as I was in an apartment.

The prices (on everything) and some of the transport details were out-of-date.
