As with all Eyewitness Guides, the multitude of glossy colour photographs are a real selling point of this guide. It's very helpful for pre-departure planning. The maps are good and integrate well with the text. There are also close up double page spreads focussing on the main sights, highlighting the best bits and mentioning the rest too. The guide focusses on the sights, and achieves a good balance between showing highlights and 'best ofs' to help a time-poor traveller choose their itinary, while still showing the less famous attractions the city has to offer. There is also information on places to eat and sleep, general cultural information, and practial information, plus a phrasebook. I found this section informative ... Read More:

We bought both this and the Michelin Normandy guide. The Michelin green book may contain a lot more details, but if pictures are worth a thousand words each, then this Eyewitness guide more than makes up for the slim volume with pictures of just about every of their recommendations. Was also delighted to realise there is not just one top-10 list, but this book talks about top-10 cathedrals, top-10 gardens, top-10 historic sites, et cetera - very useful when we needed specific thematic recommendations for our itinerary.

I have just had my best holiday, in fact my honeymoon, off the back of this book. We were deteremined to see as much of the Basque, Rioja and Navarra as possible in the 10 days of freedom and DK took us straight to them. We went to 2 of the cheepest hotels in the book- but not any old B&B as we found out. The first was in a Benedictine monastery 5 miles along a road with not a soul in sight, occupying an entire mountain valley all to itself. Run by a tiny and hugely enthusiastic lady and a few staff we were given a wonderful local 3 course dinner including Navarran wine, a beautiful double room and breakfast for E100. With us were only an English couple, a Spanish family and 3 German friends so all that remained was for Hercule Poirot ... Read More:

When I worked in the library service, I grew to admire Dorling Kindersley's Eyewitness books for the clarity of their design, so I had no hesitation in buying this Eyewitness guide to Paris. Each chapter represents an area of the city: the first page of the section gives a brief overview on the top half of the page, with a map on the lower half locating the major attractions. A double page spread follows with an aerial 3d illustration rather than a map, which is a nice touch because you can retrace some of your movements on your return and remember buildings and parks etc from the illustration. This 2006 revised edition runs over 600 pages, and includes an introductory section as well as 8 sections on the various areas of Australia, including one for Sydney by itself. It also has a section for Travelers' needs, which include accommodations, restaurants, and shopping information, and a section titled "Survival Guide" which contains a lot of useful information for travelers. This Guide to Madrid looks appealing and I set off with it for a few days in Madrid.It has a confusing layout which necessitates much to-ing and fro-ing. This design fault was rendered a horror by the fact that NONE of the pages cross-referenced and which I used turned out to be correct. It had me shouting aloud with frustration as I tried to find my way around the book and the information I needed.I can only assume this is a new edition (2007) which has neither had the page references adjusted nor been proof-read. I also tried a so-called 'guided walk' and got lost. On checking with a map it was not my fault but on the ground the 'guide' was inaccurate. Hard to countenance a publishing house letting this go out.I have not reviewed a book before but I could not let this ... Read More:
