This whole series of books is seriously inspiring and a complete joy to browse through. The photos are breathtaking, the commentary is engaging and the whole book is thoroughly compelling. I've already booked my next holiday to include 3 of the suggestions made in these books!

On a two week holiday to Japan, bought this and another major guide at the airport, hot off the press. Many aspects are disappointing, for example, the guide is organised by theme, and not by area. I'm staying in Shinjuku, if i want to look up accommodation, that's on page 117, but if you want a map, that's 40 pages away o p150, and somewhere to go out, try page 180, and the sights? flip back 30 pages or so... I think you get the idea. Does it have a handy index? No. A cross reference? No. The maps, which I thought were okay when I flicked through it at the airport, aren't that detailed. When being a tourist giving clear directions and landmarks is crucial. The book is more of a description than a guide, so sometimes you're stuck as to what ... Read More:

Took my fiance to Paris recently and bought this book for the trip.
Have always been impressed when I've taken one of the Lonely Planet guides on my travels, and this book maintained the high standards that I've come to expect from them.
Doesn't matter if you know a bit about where you are visiting or if you are completely clueless - everything you could need to know is in here.
Well written, easy to use, full of useful information, and yet small enough to fit in a coat pocket.
Highly recommend.

I wonder where LP will set its own limit on the destinations they cover. Being excellent and nr.1 in guidebooks of unexplored, less known or not well organized places, they also have written books about places like Malta (and The Canary Islands) where one can go easy on your own without a guidebook like this one.
About Malta there are numerous guidebooks with detailled descriptions of the places, and that is what people ever need to visit Malta. Most people will be there in some sort of package tour already anyway. Once there the locals speak english and the island is so well organized you do not need a LP to find out what to do, how to get around etc. The tourist office is also extremely well providing brochures, maps of everything you need ... If you are planning to take a trip on the Trans-Siberian, Trans-Mongolian or Trans-Manchurian railway, I URGE you to purchase this book! I cannot express how invaluable this book was to me during my trip.

The book contains a wealth of important information. It helps you to book your trip with suggestions of companies to go through as well as informing you of any complications that may arise such as visas, vaccinations. It has a stop-by-stop guide of the entire length of the railway for all 3 journies as well as kilometre markings and places of interest along the route outside of stops, for photo opportunities and such.

Inside of stops, for the bigger towns along the way it contains a map (very valuable) marking out places of ... Read More:

A very, very good map of Venice, with lots on it. In fact, perhaps, too much. You have to read this map in advance of your trip - become adept at finding a grid reference for a restaurant, for example, or a "sight" if that's what you are on your way to see.
Good:
- the public transport routes are right, though not very obvious from the map, but there's an official "venice transport" map on the back.
- even the traghetto routes are right(a gondola ferry - E0.50 this year, 2008)
- "road" names are clear and easy to read, if you've got the right glasses on... you reach an age.....
- many reasonable restaurants/bars marked, but coded by cost, which means there are 20 or so entries marked as B on the map, the grid is crucial ... Read More:

I don't know what I expected but certainly nothing this detailed or so well-written. It was fun to read, and completely educational. I don't have children of my own but as a travel writer I need to know what women travelers and mothers can expect. I wouldn't hesitate a single second to offer this book as a gift to parents, or to recommend it without reservation to anyone considering travel with young children. Not only is it practical, it's fun. I learned plenty about attitudes towards children around the world. Well done!
