I own one of the pubs listed, the George and Devonshire, in Chiswick. It is the oldest pub in Chiswick, built some time prior to 1657, and we still trade in the original building. However, Bob Steel commits the cardinal error of not checking his facts by casually stating the the pub is s '20th century re-build', which would appear to be obvious nonsense to anyone who has actually visited the place! If Bob Steel did not visit the George and Devonshire, which is Casque Mark accredited for the quality of our real ale, how many other pubs included in the book were also not visited?

I found the 2002 edition excellent and I'm sure the new edition will be at least as good. Background information is excellent, and the maps and details of individual places of interest (particularly archaeological sites) give all the information one needs to appreciate them in full. Only down side: not many photographs.

As usual an excellent publication Eyewitness.Very comprehensive coverage by area in alphabetical order. Maps clear an concise especially with the enlarged section which is useful for walking about especially as it has a fold over book mark. Found the two part maps of the Forum East/west difficult to use as you tend to visit it in one go. When you use the Palatine map unless you enter by there suggested entrance it is quite hard to relocate I would definately buy one but i linked mine with an OXford Archaeological Guide by Amanda Claridge. Ate at some of the retaurants in the guide they were reliable,checked off some of the hotels it suggested but contacted hotels own websites for better deals.

Thanks to Alistair Sawday I have much more room on the bookshelf; the AA, RAC, Michelin and Johansens books won't be needed again so they have all taken a long holiday to the charity bookshop! Sawday's British Hotels & Inns is much more then a book; it is a guide that will change your attitude towards `going away' forever. In the past trying to find a nice place to stay was always the job of my wife who would spend hours researching places, but now there is a sprint to the bookshelf to find this book whenever we decide to go anywhere. Once I've found somewhere I like the feel of I don't even bother doing any additional research...what's the point, the guys at Alistair Sawday have done it all for you. When you initially read ... Before I bought this book there were loads of other customer reviews (don't know why there are none today) with varied opinions - quite a few negative ones, so I ended up buying the Eyewitness Travel guide and the AA spiral guide instead. Whilst the Eyewitness book is lovely to look at having so many colour photos and th AA book is a handy size, I have to say that I ended up buying the Lonely Planet guide as well as it has far more detailed information about the island eg history, costs, restaurants, just everything really. It is written by someone who has tried and tested all that the island has to offer and its detailed reviews entice you to go and try for yourself. It really is a far more superior guide, though admittedly not so attractive to look at.
