I visited Peru as part of a trip around South America in the summer and took this book in my backpack. I found it to be the most valuable item in my rucksack as it told me about some great hostels, brilliant eateries, and fab sights. All the entries were very up-to-date, unlike some of the other guidebooks out there. It was easy to find the information I required and the maps were simple to use. All in all a great product.

Entering the busy, teeming Ypres (Ieper, as we have it) through the Menin Gate (de Menenpoort), any visitor will involuntarily believe the cosy old city has retained its erstwhile elegance unimpaired. By 1917 the Ypres as Edmund Blunden saw it, had been reduced to smithereens. I have visited Istanbul around nine times and Izmir about seven. This guide will really take you to the wrong hotels and restaurants. The cultural guide is ok despite a rather boring layout, esp. maps. But the restaurant suggestions are disasterous: where do you find Istanbul's best gourmet, Corne d'Or, or the intellectual bastion Yakup 2, or the best chicken and mezes in Istanbul (Hanedan), or the nostalgic charm of Istanbul's 1930's belle epoque (Rejans)? Instead mediocre places are recommended which will give the dogmatic reader a mediocre holiday. Also, Lonely Planet does not mention the new hotel in Izmir (Crowne Plaza Izmir) which receives raving critics. Does it not know of it yet? And no mention of restaurants like Bonjour, British Grill ... Read More:

If you doing any battlefield tours you will never go far wrong with getting the books by Holt's. informative, factual, easy to understand and packed with hints and tips a must for all budding historians.

I bought this for my Irish father who now lives in England. He visits Ireland regularly and knows some of the pubs in this book. Would make a great present for anyone with Irish roots or also if you're planning on going on holiday there it would be a handy guide of places to stop off at for a pint! A lovely freeze frame of Irish pubs.

After the low point of my relationship with Lonely Planet (Montréal and Québec City), I was pleased to have my faith restored in the imprint with this excellent guide. As you'd expect, author Damien Simonis sings the city's praises, but it's never over the top and, let's face it, how many cities can you name that can beat Barcelona? (Of the three I can think of, two are Spanish.) This is a well-measured talking up of a city that needs no talking up. A number of elements make Barcelona for me: accessibility of live music, art, food and language.
