It has been since December 2005, that I have visited this busy and buzzing city of Bangkok. I needed a nice and easy guide which would pinpoint all the main attractions of Bangkok and the Lonely Planet offers me all the answers I needed to make the best out of my journey in Bangkok. It is a handy guide to have.

Bangkok (Lonely Planet) is a short and useful guide, complimented with pictures and brief text about particular attractions of Bangkok. It details all the hotels, restaurants, bars, museums and shops available in Bangkok. What more do you want? In addition, it offers advice on key matters, such as travellers cheques, culture, transport and banks. Make the best out of your journey in Bangkok by using this guide. What more ... Read More:

I am surprised at the negative feedback here. As a consistent user of Lonely Planet guides, I have to say that this ranked as one of the more useful country guides i have come across. Writing guidebooks must be a very tricky business - it is necessary to include such a vast quantity of information, while trying simultaneously to capture the feel and mood of a country in such a way that people know what to expect back home. This particular guide does an excellent job in this respect.

I spent one month travelling from Pretoria to Cape Town, taking a winding route through Swaziland and Lesotho. I had no schedule and went where I wanted when I wanted. And perhaps it is for this kind of travelling that this guide is most suitable - it ... Read More:

At first sight, a useful book despite a dictionary at the back that contains some glaring omissions of basic words such as 'from' and 'please', as well as other useful words such as 'sting'. Its culinary reader is threadbare too, with plenty of omissions - annoying when tried to decipher a menu.

But the real flaw is in the phonetic spellings of the Portuguese words. The author uses 'ng' to indicate the nasal vowels that characterise Brazilian Portuguese, but this only works about half the time. The rest of the time you're just mispronouncing the word.

The biggest omission of all, though, is as follows. In Brazilian Portuguese, when a 't' is followed by an 'e' or an 'i', this means the 't' is pronounced like the 'j' in jam ... Read More:

This paperback with 353 pages has a large colour map on pages 4-5. The first few pages deals with getting started. Then the book goes on to the history, culture, environment, safaris and the Tanzanian wildlife. There is a chapter on food and drink.
The book then moves on to different areas of Tanzania. You need to decide where you are going and then concentrate on that chapter. Once decided, log on to internet and check the lodges, roads and maps. The internet gives you lodges and camps in detail with photos.
The last chapters in the book deal with, transport, health, language and do's and don'ts. These are a must read. There are beautiful colour photos, maps and street maps through out the book.

I found this phrasebook really useful. It was small enough to put in my bag and I used it everyday. Even when I could not pronounce certain things I would just show whomever I needed help from and they understood straightaway. It has both English and Japanese dictionary and it came in handy when I fell ill and had to go to the doctors. This is great for anyone who is going to Japan for the first time.

We found the LP guide to Dublin to be as accurate and informative as all the others we've used.

Information is presented in a very easy to follow format. Recommendations are to be relied upon. We tried a Lebanese restaurant in the book and had a truly delicious meal. We booked a lodge on LP recommendation and it was exactly as described in the book. We did a walking tour in the book and it was brilliant.

I don't think I could actually do a sightseeing holiday now without LP as a companion. I'd feel lost without one.

Took this book on our Honeymoon to Bali in September. Absolutely essential tool for finding the huge number of hidden treasures. We were at Nusa Dua which was poorly covered, but bare in mind that the Lonely books are for your globe trotting surfer.
But the rest of the island was very well covered and gave some great detail on the main attractions.
The Island guide was very useful giving details of local customs and amenities.
Would make sure this is in your pocket when you go.
A few tips
1. Watch the "helpers" at the airport, they will swamp you at the conveyor and fleece you for the pleasure of carrying your bag. Just say no.
2. If you are at one of the big resorts/ hotel complexes, hire you first taxi through the hotel. ... Read More:

I wonder where LP will set its own limit on the destinations they cover. Being excellent and nr.1 in guidebooks of unexplored, less known or not well organized places, they also have written books about places like Malta (and The Canary Islands) where one can go easy on your own without a guidebook like this one.
About Malta there are numerous guidebooks with detailled descriptions of the places, and that is what people ever need to visit Malta. Most people will be there in some sort of package tour already anyway. Once there the locals speak english and the island is so well organized you do not need a LP to find out what to do, how to get around etc. The tourist office is also extremely well providing brochures, maps of everything you need before and during ...
