I carried both this Rough Guide and the Footprint guide with me on a recent trip to Peru. In comparison, I found that the Rough Guide contained lots of annoying small editorial errors, e.g. a map printed the wrong way up, and was also often factually a bit out of date. However, the descriptions of the sights are covered in much more detail, as is the background info to Peru. It seems to me that the Rough Guide editors have done their homework on Peru, but perhaps not so much "fieldwork", meaning they don't seem to have checked the facts on the ground very thoroughly. In the end I found it useful to have both guides: the Footprint for accurate travel info and the Rough Guide for more detailed descriptions of the sights. ... Read More:

This is could be a very useful guide BUT we found both the accommodation infos and the maps EXTREMELY UNRELIABLE. Hostels are likely to either no longer exist or to differ strongly from the descriptions provided. If the guide says that a hostel is "not so nice", read that as a clear "stay away, this place is a dump". You can spare yourself some horrid nights that way. Just ask other people where they stayed and write it down in a notebook. We found the city maps simply abysmal. Entire blocks and streets were missing from the map of Osorno, which led to an hour long trek across town, whereas the map showed that our accommodation was just two blocks away from the Plaza da Armas. Having said that, RG is definitely better than LG, which seems to ... Read More:

I would highly recommend this book when about to plan a round the world trip or indeed any kind of solo travel where you will need to plan your own routes and accomodation. It is inspiring and colourful with vibrant pictures giving you ideas about where you may like to go, and detailed tips and information about all aspects of your trip. It covers what to take, how much to take, who to travel with and even deals with coming home again. It is written in a way that appeals to both young students/graduates/young people who are about to embark upon an adventure but it is not soley for this group.
