The Rough Guides rarely disappoint. They are thorough and interesting. My only complaint is that Murcia, as usual in guidebooks like this, just doesn't get the treatment it deserves. I always buy the most recent edition, but suggest you can probably skip an edition now and then!

I can only comment on the section on Almeria region, an area which I have been to a number of times and which I am starting to explore more. I bought this guide to help me find out more and was pleased with the level of information on history, architecture, etc. However I was disappointed with the way the author dismisses so many places because they do not meet what appear to be his lofty criteria of 'old and untouched Spain'. Spain is rapidly changing and development is reaching into even remote areas. This should be accepted and dealt with more maturely. Far, far superior to the Lonely Planet guide, which (as usual) seems to have been written sitting in a bar somewhere, relying on second-hand information. The Rough Guide, on the other hand, feels fresh, vibrant and accurate. Far more comprehensive, it explores places slightly off the beaten track, has far better restaurant listings and is much easier to use generally. Lonely Planet is trendy and ubiquitous, but after a back-to-back test, you have to wonder why. The Rough Guide has far more on the history and culture of the country, and is far more readable. One feels it has been written by people of intelligence and culture; the LP, on the other hand, feels as though it has been scribbled by semi-literate back-packers. This map travelled around southern india with and was my best friend!! It's very accurate, lightweight, waterproof and easy to read (not so easy to fold, but I've not yet met a map that is!)

This map is an absolute must for anyone going to Marrakech. I recently went and not only would have been totally lost without it, but would have missed out on some of the treasures Marrakech has to offer. Street names are a rarity but this map makes up for the lack of them by being absolutely perfect - even through the maze of the souqs! Without it i may have had to resort to pay a few dirham to be guided by locals who either take you on a roundabout route to where you want to be, normally via their cousins tannery, or send you in completely the wrong direction and laugh at you as you go. Buy it before you leave or suffer the consequences!

Whenever I am going on holiday, one of the most exciting things for me is buying the rough guide before we go. On the rare occasion that I haven't done this i've felt I've gone into things blind and not taken the best choices in terms of trips etc. This rough guide did prove invaluable on our trip to Sharm el Sheik and a day trip to Cairo, however the one thing I would question, and I find this is generally the case with Rough Guides, is that the prices quoted for meals and, in this case especially, taxis is often way out. We travelled only a month after this book was published, so I would expect it to be much more up to date than it was. A very well written book and guide to France. It has great advice on eating out. banking, driving and even buying or renting a home. Plus all the hot spots and nice places to visit off the main track.
