VHS : What Women Want (2000)
Romantic comedy in which Mel Gibson stars as a chauvinistic advertising executive who one day after a freak accident finds that he can hear women's thoughts, and uses this to his advantage, not least of all in the workplace. An intriguing premise that makes a lot of its comic potential but I felt that more could have been done with the idea and the ending is a big let-down. Could and should be better.

This is a wonderful film. It makes you laugh and makes you cry. There are really only 2 people in it and the acting is outstanding.I've had it for many years after taping it one night but I now want to buy it on DVD.

VHS : Crimes And Misdemeanors [1990]
Despite what other critics have said, it remains untrue that Allen only discovered Bergman after the "early funny ones" and thus, flippantly decided to be profound. Long-term aficionados of the director will know that he was indulging in homage to the likes of Bergman, Godard and Fellini as far back as Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex, Sleeper, and Love & Death. However, whereas those films took certain elements from European cinema and turned them into satire, Allen would eventually begin to explore his own serious side with films like Interiors, Stardust Memories, Another Woman and September, before finally perfected his new found style with this glorious and morally oblique modern-masterpiece.

VHS : M.A.S.H. - Series 1
Many have been waiting to purchase the MASH TV series in the UK for a long time - it's been available in the US for a while now. The series is great - the early seasons, with Wayne Rogers, McLean Stevenson and Larry Linville are the best. However, those buying the video beware - they have canned laughter. The show was shown in the US with canned laughter, but shown in the UK on BBC2 with the laughter track removed. This VHS version has the canned laughter, which is disappointing as the show is not often laugh-out-loud comedy. Those buying the DVD version have a choice to remove the laughter track if they wish.
That said, it's still a great show and worth having in your collection.

I just don't get this movie. Yes, there are some funny one liners from Allen, but this is NOT a five star movie in my humble opinion. Sorry!

VHS : Mad City [1998]
This is an above average film. The plot is, admittedly, a little overblown and exaggerated, but it has a wonderful clarity. The message is simple - the media are now running our lives, and how true that is. The film has striking parallels with Ace in the Hole (1951), and also with The Truman Show (1998) in that both deal with society's manipulation by the media.

Hoffmann plays the TV reporter to perfection, and Travolta's performance is distinguished by the fact that this is one of the few roles where he is playing one of the lowly of society. He portrays it well, and from the first time you see him you can tell that he is quite stupid, but well-meaning.

The overhead shot of the media rat-pack at the end leaves a lasting impression of our crazy world.

VHS : And The Band Played On
In the midst of the growing crisis of the AIDS epidemic, one journalist who witnessed the development and destruction wrought by this disease firsthand put together a regular series of columns chronicling what he felt was important for history not to forget. Appearing locally in San Francisco (perhaps ground zero for the epidemic, or certainly one of the first major sites to suffer) and then nationally in the likes of `Rolling Stone', Randy Shilts' commentary grew into the text `And the Band Played On', which follows the history of the AIDS crisis from many perspectives.

In reducing this massive tome to a reasonable-length feature, HBO pictures and Aaron Spelling (yes, Spelling, best known for Beverly Hills: 90210 and the like) had to devise a way of making it interesting ... Read More:
