VHS : An Englishman Abroad [1983]
"How can he be a spy?" says Guy Burgess in Moscow, as he quotes the attitude of his former fellow British upper-class diplomats, "He goes to my tailor."

He's talking to Coral Browne, an Australian actress who was appearing as Gertrude in a Royal Shakespeare Company production of Hamlet in Moscow. It's 1958. She has visited Burgess in his drab apartment which he shares with his government-sanctioned male lover, an aging youth who speaks no English. Burgess has barely learned a few words of Russian. "I know what I've done to deserve him," he says, "but I don't know what he's done to deserve me."

Burgess, along with Kim Philby, Donald Maclean and Anthony Blunt comprised the Cambridge Four. They were a group of Cambridge ... Read More:

watching this adaptation was like flicking through the book and picking out a few choice sentences-you cannot expect to successfully represent a dickens novel in 100 minutes so why even try? beatie edneys attempt to portray louisa gradgrinds cold nature was to frown at every given moment, whilst patsy byrnes role was almost comical in a novel where few laughs are found.this was originally meant for showing in schools but is more likely to put the viewer off reading dickens rather than encourage it!

VHS : Far From The Madding Crowd [1967]
It bemuses me to read some of the opinions expressed on here from those who are willing (inexplixably) to ignore or overlook the poor transfer of this fim onto VHS and DVD.
Far From The Madding Crowd was an event when originally released in 1967.
We sat back in our theatre seats and watched an epic on widescreen that was both enchanting and mesmerising. Julie Christie was a major star back then and dominated the screen with her portrayal of the headstrong Bathsheba.
Peter Finch, one of finest character actors ever - played the obsessed wealthy landowner Boldrewood, Alan Bates playing the romantic lead Gabriel,in another rivetting, earthy performance, and Terrence Stamp as soldier Frank Troy also turned in a fine performance. . ... Read More:

Stan Barstow was one of the most underrated writers of the sixties and the following decades, and a hell of a nice bloke. Schlessinger does a
great job of translating it to film without losing much of Barstow's incisive writing. Alan Bates and June Ritchie (then an unknown amateur) were near perfect casting, as was Thora Hird. Unfortunately, I do not feel the other pricipals were so well cast, not that they weren't up to the job - quite the opposite. However, having been introduced to the book in 1967 - as part of day-release - by a student teacher with the longest legs in the universe and who would not have looked out of place on the screen herself, and reading it on average once every eighteen months I envisage them differently. Vic's new brother ... Read More:

With Alan Bates how could this not be a fabulous version of The Mayor of Casterbridge! Again, English theatre at its very best. Wonderful storyline, brilliant acting and the English countryside - who could ask for more.

This was a high-quality production and pretty accurate historically, at least as far as I can tell from my reading of various biographies and other books relating to the British Royal Family. The only problem I had with this teleplay was its presentation of the character of Edward VIII, Duke of Windsor.

There is one scene in particular, which shows him grabbing Wallis Simpson's backside, which is completely out of character for him. Anyway SHE would have bitten his head off if he'd tried anything like that with her in "real life", because she was always (despite anything else that can be said about her) very conscious of her dignity, as he was also...I suppose the filmmaker needed to "dramatize" what a selfish, self-centered person Edward was, ... VHS : Hamlet [1991]
This Play is one of the most important pieces of drama and poetry in Shakespeare's complete works. A cycle of peace and quiet is disturbed by an incestuous crime, both the murder of a brother and the hasty and sensuous marriage of the murderer with the victim's wife, a marriage which is totally against the normal Christian and feudal rules of the time : you are not supposed to covet the wife of your brother. Then havoc falls onto the kingdom of Denmark. Hamlet is forced to play deranged and crazy to save his life and to cover up his violent defense against dangers around him. Ophelia will get deranged to the point of drowning herself. Then the cycle of disturbances will go on to its utter end which means the destruction of all the protagonists. Shakespeare's vision ... VHS : Whistle Down The Wind [1961]

A truly lovely film, beautifully shot in black and white, and definitely an all time British classic from the early 60s.

Hayley Mills leads a marvellous cast of some very talented and 'innocent' children who mistakenly believe a criminal on the run to be Jesus Christ.

Perfectly scripted with some great dialogue after being sent to bed between the two sisters after discovering who they believe to be Jesus in the barn, and lots of 'typical' behaviour from children of that period, and from a time long gone... (more's the pity...) After viewing this movie, nobody should be under any illusion that children are better off with all their designer clothes, mobile phones, sophisticated toys, and all the protection and pampering of today ...
