VHS : High Sierra/Treasure of Sierra M.. [1941]

A classic film of ambition turning to greed and mistrust ending in paranoia and insanity.

This is a classic Bogart film with terrific performances all round.

The subject of the film is "there's gold in them their hills" - the so called treasure in the Sierra Madre mountain range.

John Huston (who also directed Bogart in "The African Queen") directs his own dad (Walter Huston) who plays the Wiley old prospector who just knows he's going to strike gold. He leads a 'down at heel' Bogart, and (relatively unknown) Tim Holt into the mountains where the fun really starts.

After months of hard gruelling work mining the gold, their task is then to retain it.

A dark, (quite literally) ... Read More:

VHS : Road Games [1982]

"I'm not fond of bloodletting on screen unless it has a real purpose," says the director of Road Games, Richard Franklin. "I'd much rather imply something. I liked the idea of the meat going to the supermarket and being sold with the possibility that two of the pieces of meat might have been long pig."

Road Games is a fine movie, a clever and often amusing film packed with creepy suspense and the possibility of unpleasantness just beyond our field of vision. It was sold as something it wasn't, a simple-minded slasher movie, and it never found its right audience. "I'm really quite proud of Road Games," says Franklin. "I think the film works very well as what Hitchcock would have referred to as a `soufflé.' He called North by Northwest ... Read More:

VHS : Nothing But The Best [1964]
This film is in the finest tradition of British wit, humour, intelligence and atmosphere. The acting is superb, the plot is rich, the direction is terrific. I simply cannot understand why it seems to have disappeared from the scene. Could it be that it is too good? Perhaps it is too good? But how do you get *too* entertaining?

Anyway, in case there is anyone out there who accidentally reads this and has not seen the film, *get* it! And see it repeatedly; you are guaranteed to miss bits the first time round, but it is so much fun that you will not find it to be an imposition to see it again.

the sets are surreal, absolutely perfect, welles gets to grips fully with shakes masterpeice, to me this is easily welles greatest acting, to me no other macbeth film comes even close, probably the one with john finch is a reasonable apprentice. the horror and evil are given full reign, some of the greatest ever moments of film, the camerawork is a work of art in itself,. i cannot understand some reveiwers moaning about the restoration it seems perfect. i have almost worn out my copy i have watched it so many times
