VHS : Chitty Chitty Bang Bang [1968]
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang [1968] 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' is my second favourite after 'The Wizard Of Oz'.'Chitty' stars Dick Van Dyke,Sally Ann Howes,Lionel Jeffries,James Robertson Justice and Robert Helpmann.Though this release onto DVD is the Full Screen version of this film i personally prefere it due to the fact this is a wonderful transfere to Disc, with it's lovely deep colours and so beautifully restored it looks like a modern film.Dick Van Dyke is superb as the children's father and transforms a run down car which turns out to be able to float and fly. They name the car 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang'.Everything is so lovely about this film from the title song 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' (We Love You),You Two,Hush-A-By Mountain and not forgetting ... The reviewer who claims that this film was originally made in 4:3 format is quite wrong. Perhaps he means the original video, which was certainly cut to fit a standard TV. But this good DVD is correctly formatted, and nothing has been cut off from the top or bottom.

That having been said, this is a very comprehensive set. The 36' documentary with reminiscences of the film's crew is fun and enlightening. One comes away with the feeling, as if we couldn't guess from the film itself, that spirits were high (pardon the expression) and everyone felt this would be something special.

The remastering here is quite good, tho perhaps not quite Criterion quality. The sound seems just a bit flat, and is much fuller in the restored WS Help! ... Read More:

VHS : Adventures of a Plumber's Mate [1978]

A more entertaining movie from the hilarious 'Adventures' series.

Christopher Neil stars in this (as he did in the 'Private Eye' before it) but is very different. These movies always opened with an hilarious scene, and this is no exception - with a cat under the bed and a mouse in it, whilst he and his girl are 'bonking'! (no animals were harmed in the filming by the way)

In this movie - Diana Dors is notably absent, but this does have a rare appearance of the 'classy' Singer Elaine Paige in a non-singing role (and is about the only woman who doesn't get to take her clothes off!) Arthur Mullard and Jerold Wells are excellent and extremely convincing as the two 'hard' nuts you won't want to cross, and Chris Biggins is hilarious ... Read More:

VHS : Adventures of a Private Eye [1977]

This feature is above average for one the 'Adventures' series - and probably the best one of the lot. It stars some big names - one of which is the great Diana Dors who proves herself a wonderful Comedienne in this in a 'bit' part, and Adrienne Posta is absolutely fabulous as 'Lisa Moroni' (a very accurate impersonation of Liza Minnelli!)

This opens with one of the funniest scenes as 'Bob West' (Christopher Neil) wakes up to find that the husband of a woman he's slept with the night before has actually climbed into bed to the side of him, and placed his arm about him believing it to be his wife - at first Neil does not realise this and proceeds to fondle and kiss the man's arm! There's quite a bit of slapstick action in this too, and there's ... Read More:

You cant beat Frankie Howerd when he is on a role. In Up the Chastity Belt he plays the serf Lurkalot, who unknown to him is actually the real King of England, only he got nabbed from the royal bed chamber and dumped into a pigsty where a friendly sow raised him as one of her own!

The real King of England,(also played by Howerd) Richard by the way takes off on the crusades and it is up to Lurkalot to find him and bring him home to safe not only England but also his master the rather daft Sir Coward de Custard and his daughter Lobelia who everyone is lusting after including a rather lethcerous old Baron who wants not only Lobelia but her father's castle as well.

Over to the Middle East we go where we find that the Crusades are actually nothing ... Read More:
