I don't know what age audience the film makers were targeting but I imagine 13 to 18 would find it enjoyable, or if you have not read the book. If you have you will find it a very disappointing adaptation. I suppose some changes to the story line are inevitable if one only has 100 minutes to deliver over 240 pages of complex writing, but none of those changes enhanced enjoyment of the novel for me. The acting was so-so, over aggressive Tara Fitzgerald wearing one sultry expression from start to finish, and Anthony Delon delivering slightly over the top "Frenchness". Which is a shame....I came across the novel whilst on holiday in Cornwall (but of course!), and being a fan of du Maurier's work I thought I'd give it a go one afternoon and I could ... Read More:

What a Pleasant Surprise it was to view this Movie!!..I am a Big fan of Alistair Maclean's novels; and have enjoyed many of the film adaptations; even if many have been seriously lacking in certain respects.....I had Never heard of this particular film (Did it even get an American release?); but stumbled upon it while shopping on Amazon's UK site (where it costs MUCH less than on the US Amazon site!)....Once again, I'm grateful to have my All-Region DVD Player; as it is doubtful this little gem will get a Stateside release any time soon; even with a very young and dynamic Anthony Hopkins in the leading hero role....I can't add much to the other reviews posted here; except to say this film is a resounding success on almost ALL levels...Acting, scripting, locations, ... This is a war film plenty of topics very own of a past time when nobody didn't knew what should become the independence of ancient colonies of Europe countries. Colonel Raspeguy is a typical unorthodox military who has learned to make real war in real combat. Summing up a figure very common in cinema but I'm afraid very unusual in real military professionals. Scenes of action are good, not as realistic as in today movies, but understandable and sufficient. So the movie sounds routine, but there are some points that make this a little different.
The first is there are many screen stars from these years: Michele Morgan, still a beauty, Alain Delon, Anthony Quinn, Maurice Ronet, Claudia Cardinale...
Secondly, it deals with two wars little times seen in movies: Indochine ... Read More:

CHRONICLE OF A DEATH FORETOLD

starring

Rupert Everett, Ornella Muti, Gian Maria Volonte

A FRANCESCO ROSI FILM

Lush adaptation of Márquez's novel set in small-town Columbia which tells the tale of a rich and eccentric drifter (Everett) who courts a local girl (Muti). On their wedding night he discovers that his bride is not a virgin and returns her to her family. Her brothers are determined to kill her former lover according to that age-old custom of avenging your sister's honour. Told in a series of flashback and interview sequences, director Rosi exposes the guilt, hypocrisy and prejudice within the town as the dead man's best friend investigates his murder.
