VHS : Andrew Lloyd Webber - The Royal Albert Hall Celebration [1998]
When in March 1998 Andrew Lloyd Webber turned 50, a full two-hour celebration gala concert was given in his honour at London's Royal Albert Hall. He certainly deserved it, since by that time he was rightly thought of as the most successful musical composer of all times. As it is wide known, he wrote numerous hit shows, including the two longest running musicals in the history of the West End and Broadway, i.e. "Cats" and "The Phantom of the Opera". So the numerous artists who performed his shows and singles were called together and they delivered this stunning concert accompanied by a wonderful symphonic orchestra. Every show up to that date, except "By Jeeves", "The Beautiful Game" and his latest, "The woman in white", was covered, the former ... Read More:

VHS : The House Of The Spirits [1994]
First of all, I must admit that I've never read the book.

To be honest, I didn't even know that this film was an adaptation until I read the other reviews on Amazon. But whilst I can imagine the rolling landscapes and the charged emotions being sensuously described in a novel, a film cannot do this. And so whilst the occasional and seemingly random occurrences do eventually come together at the end, I spent the whole time waiting for something to happen, and then just breathed a sigh of relief when the whole thing was finally over.

As well as those few plot points that tied together of course, there were several blind alleys which (in my opinion) added absolutely nothing to the story. And so whilst the coup near the end of ... Read More:

This movie is one of my favourites. The moving feeling I had right after watching it for the first time still remains convincing and I am going to watch it again,as I think it is one of the best movies done.Based on a great Isabel Allendes novel it pictures the "hot" environment and latin-american ways.....And Antonio Banderas is simply gorgeous .Watch The House of Spirits or Eva Luna as well.

VHS : Original Sin [2001]
This film I found to be OK- the plot was pretty good and the characters unusual. The film is based on a book and this is obvious in that the film is full of literary twists, which probably work better in the book- for instance several characters just appear for a brief moment and aren't developed as fully as perhaps they should- I liked this story as essentially it is a love story of the underworld, of infatuation and lust and this is conveyed remarkably well by Banderas and Jolie, who really do have a special on-screen chemistry. However, perhaps one should consider that this film was never released on DVD in Britain and I can't remember it adorning our screens either- so maybe if you're after a cinematic experience- i.e a fantastic film, perhaps you should ... VHS : Miami Rhapsody [1995]
In writer/director David Frankel's film, Sarah Jessica Parker agrees to marry Gil Bellows, only to uncover the infidelities which infest her family. In spite of a large cast, Frankel sets up scenes between two people at a time which makes the narrative more about character than ensemble acting. The snappy dialogue, jazz on the soundtrack, careful attention to lighting and the casting of Mia Farrow all recall good (ie earlier) Woody Allen. It also features the most kissing scene I've ever seen. Parker appears in almost every scene and this overexposure works since she is such a natural and likeable actress. Wearing Gorgon hair and sexually adrogynous, she resembles Bette Midler and shares Midler's gift for delivering throwaway barbs. Frankel only asks her to get ... Read More:

VHS : In Bed With Madonna [1991]
I really don't think the makers of this product should have been allowed to call it the "ultimate" collection because it just isn't. Infact it's a very incomplete collection in my opinion...I'm a huge Madonna fan, I've been one since "Music" came out and discovering her older work made me really fall in love with her as an artist. I'm now the type of fan who will buy almost anything if Madonna has something to do with it, so naturally I had to buy this two disc DVD boxset.

As I said, calling it the Ultimate collection is, in my opinion, a gross case of mis-representation. How can it be "ultimate" if half of Madonna's music video's are missing? I can understand that the video's which are soundtracks to movies are missing...maybe there were issues with ... Read More:

These movies are great like most animated movies that dreamworks produce. It is great for the kids but has an underlying adult humour which is great. This means that i can watch it and laugh at the same time my son watches it. Very funny excellent characters. The second movie follows on really well and is just as entertaining as the first.
If you have kids i would buy it.

VHS : The Mambo Kings [1992]
I found out by this movie by accident and I'm surprised that it's not better known. It really transports you into the Mambo world of 1950's New York and is very glamorous. We've heard similar stories before, but the acting by both Armand Assante and Antonio Banderas is very convincing. However, an accent coach might have been useful for both, one sounds too American and the other speaks Spanish with the European lisp; clearly not Cuban. It features the real Mambo King and Queen, Tito Puente and Celia Cruz and also a small cameo by José Alberto. The club scenes are electric with fantastic dancing and hot rhythms and for me it's astounding how little mambo music and dancing seems to have changed since then. Yes, it's a bit cheesy in parts, especially when Armand ... Read More:

VHS : The 13th Warrior [1999]
I love this film, i mean LOVE it. Historical Fantasy at its very best.
Its easily as good as The Vikings (1958), better than Pathfinder (which i do like!) & nearly as good as Excalibur (1981).
Plenty of action, interesting Nordic characters, great locations, moody cinematography, atmospheric sets, decent FX and more than enough blood & severed limbs!
Its not a fantasy film as explicitly as Conan The Barbarian or Lord Of The Rings - Its more like Pathfinder or Troy in that sense, walking that fine line between history & legend. The Wendol creatures that the Viking warriors wage a brutal war against are not really monsters per se but you'd have a hard time classing them strictly as men. They are best described as a warrior race of cannibalistic, ... Read More:
