VHS : Schindler's List [1994]
In telling Schindler's story the director chose black and white and the beginning intimates that it might be in the great tradition of 'The Third Man' etc. Unfortunately the film meanders astray into detailed descriptions of the holocaust and the dynamic of the film is lost. Instead of a tense 1 hour 50 minutes of cunning, guile and threat there are literal hours when almost everything is 'spelt out' in many long takes and diversions. The great film techniques of suggestion and inference are little used as almost every action is shown literally and dramatic movement is lost to history lesson. It seems to me important that the dramatic 'backdrop' of any artistic production has to be understood and accepted for the story using that scenario to ... Read More:

VHS : Room At The Top [1959]

Probably one of the most tragically romantic movies ever made - thanks to the beautiful actress Simone Signoret, who gives one of her most sincerest performances ever here, as she plays Alice Aisgill, whose unfortunate love-life is doomed to end in tragedy... Another outstanding actress who gave one of her finest performances captured in one fiery scene was Hermione Baddeley (who ironically in real life went on to have an affair with Laurence Harvey - a most unpredictable match if ever there was one)

Joe Lampton (Harvey) is a social climber who's bent on getting the cash as well as the girl! He does not care whose toes he treads on to get there - except perhaps that of Alice Aisgill (Signoret) who unintentionally gets in the ... Read More:

Belleville Rendez-Vous (The Triplets of Belleville)

A quirky french animation about a young boy who realises his dream. It's a movie I haven't seen which I have been meaning to see for a while and strange quality about it drew me in. Its interesting to see the relationship develop with the young boy and his grandemother over the years, the funny clockwork barking of the dog and I like the way the beginning mirrors the ending. Its caricatural nature and the musical tie-in make it a funny and enjoyable watch. Cracking 'silent movie', a must see for those into the wierd and wonderful.

VHS : The Bells Go Down [1943]
I first watched this film many years ago,and enjoyed it very much, which is why I bought the video, but I had forgotten just how much the spectacular scenes of the burning buildings, and the dangers of fighting multiple fires during the Blitz could make you feel that you were there with them.James Mason,Finlay Currie, and Tommy Trinder take the main parts in the story, with sub-plots concerning the other characters, with Mervyn Johns, perfect as the local spiv and William Hartnell(Dr Who)sharing his knowledge with his colleagues of the bombing in the Spanish Civil War.It can be a bit wearing with the constant wisecracking of Tommy Trinder in the beginning, but as the film progresses he changes into the perfect fire fighter, much to James Mason(his team leader's ... I just want to make one important comment before I comment any further so I don't mislead anybody who has never seen this before, it is not a blood and guts type of horror movie but still has every right to be classed as a horror movie. It is mostly about a little girl called Carole Anne (Heather O'Rourke who tragically died at a very young age) that disappears through a television and the suffering and helplessness of the rest of the family.

This is a superb horror film and I genuinely can't remember the last time this was shown on terrestrial TV or even freeview, so if it has been shown in the last few years then I must have missed it, even more amazing is the fact this has not yet been released on region 2 DVD but it has been out for years ... VHS : Oh! Mr Porter [1937]
this is the best film will hay ever made; by this time in his career, he was at his peak, the on-screen chemistry of him and moore marriott and graham moffatt would become timeless thanks to this and their next film "ask a policeman," and hay easily rivalled george formby at the box office.
this is the earliest example i've seen of the crooks of the film using a ghost theme as a cover-up for their illegal activities and it works wonders. this provides a few chills as well as laughs.
my personal favourite scene is where hay and his cohorts are stuck on a moving windmill. pure genius.
at this time, will hay made the shocking announcement that he didn't want to work with his two regular co-stars anymore. they would only appear in two more ... Read More:

VHS : Swept Away [2002]
You have to take this film for what it is; Guy Ritchie probably bullied by his wife into making a romantic film that's a bit pretentious in which she will star - it was never going to be any good but the fact that it is so bad makes it enjoyable. So if you want a good night in for less than a tenner invite a mate round, rent this film and get through a couple of bottles of wine!

10.Invasion Of The Body Snatchers [1956] starring: Kevin McCarthy, Dana Wynter, Larry Gates, King Donovan, Carolyn Jones

VHS : Invasion Of The Body Snatchers [1956]

Definitely one of the most exciting sci-fi movies ever made!

This is one of those movies that can be watched over and over again and still be enthralling - no re-make could ever match this original, starring Kevin McCarthy and Dana Wynter.

Huge seed pods arrive from outer space that 'hatch' and take on the form of 'imageless' human bodies. As soon as the nearest person falls asleep, 'it' becomes that person - exactly the same in every way, but without emotion. A Doctor and his girl put up a tremendous fight against this phenomenon, and this film is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end!

Great stuff!
