VHS : The Wild Bunch [1970]
"Its time we started thinking beyond our guns, those days are closing fast," muses Pike (William Holden) shortly after the bloodiest shootout in cinema history. The shootout was the result of a botched robbery attempt, and it soon descended into chaotic carnage where Pike and his titular Wild Bunch are forced to shoot their way out of an ambush, killing a good portion of civilians in the crossfire.

This classic movie was released in 1969 in response to the hugely successful gay western `Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'. Butch Cassidy's huge success at the box office essentially green lit the way for Sam Peckinpah's vision of a changing wild west in The Wild Bunch.
It would be a travesty to think about The Wild Bunch in ... Read More:

VHS : Belly [1999]
OK, if you're intereseted in New York rap. Nas, DMX and a insane appearance by Method Man as an off-his head Ghetto assasin. Don't expect great cinema though. Dircted by the same Hype Williams who did those cheesy shiny-suit videos in the mid-nineties, the film itself is a bit of a mess, with nothing to say that Boyz'n'the Hood didn't say almost a decade earlier. While that film meant something, Belly is nothing but a slice of gun porn, played out to a Hip Hop soundtrack...I think Hype Williams needs to stick to his music videos.

VHS : Shane [1953]
I shall always remember the thrill as a small boy when my parents took me to a local cinema to watch a western. Randolph Scott and particularly Joen McCrea were the order of the day at the time. But Shane was such a hard act to follow regular westerns were just not the same after. Shane played by Alan Ladd, was so good that even with the enhanced photography of today there are not many westerns that can hold a candle to this thoughtful film.

It is interesting that the original intended casting was for Montgomery Clift to play the part of Shane and for William Holden to portray Joe Starrett. Whilst I can see the logic of these selections, Katharine Hepburn as the Mrs. Starrett just does not seem right somehow.

For me however, ... Read More:

I cant reccommend Red Dawn enough.Easily the most laughable film ever made.Shocking propaganda and hilariously cheesey and wooden performances from all invovled.Frighting that it was ever supposed to be taken seriously.Patricks "tormented" Lawerance of Arabia leader type character is worth the asking price alone. The film is constant throughout with each scene just as absurd and humourous as the preceeding one.A true classic, fun for all the family.10/10

VHS : The Hunter [1980]
It must have looked like a winner on paper - the foremost action hero of his age - true life story of bounty hunter, car chases, human story, terrific cast with a real chance for acting... It's not a disaster, but it's a limp effort at either a character piece, a bio, or an action movie even though it has elements of all three.
The movie covers a period in the life of the real life bounty hunter (supposedly the last...) of `Papa' Thorsen. His exploits catching various guys on the run, is contrasted with his life at home where he not only has a soft spot for lost causes, but has a beautiful wife pregnant with his child. Some semblance of drama to drive the movie along is given by one of McQueen's ex catches getting out of jail and threatening to kill him (yawn). McQueen ... Read More:

VHS : Major Dundee [1965]
An epic classic that could have been starring the cream of Hollywood. Major Dundee was hampered by studio tampering and conflicts that arose between Peckinpah and his movie producers. The final product looks like the bits and pieces of what might have been a fascinating film.

When the film went over schedule and budget, the Columbia executives took the film away from Peckinpah and handed it over to a team of their own editors. They evidently cut a good portion of the film in order to give a shorter running time (which would allow for more screenings per day). In order to cover some of the gaping holes in the plotline, the character of the company bugler became the narrator of the story in an attempt to tie up many of the loose ends.

VHS : The Sacketts [1979]
Three brothers, for different reasons, are forced to leave their home. Two,Orrin(Tom Sellack)and Ty(Jeff Osterhage)end up together on a cattle drive eventually becoming lawmen in Santa Fe.The other ,Tell(Sam Elliott)ends up gold prospecting in the Rockies but their paths eventually cross when the Bigalow clan headed up by Ira(Jack Elam)who are after Tell track him down to a small border town which brings Orrin and Ty running to the side of their brother.
Based upon two of Louis L'Amour's many Sacketts novels, the gunplay is a little pokey and plot developments are played heavy handedly when the finesse of say a Lonesome Dove is needed.Peter Osterhage(save for one tension filled showdown)is weak as is Tom Sellack in a strangely subdued performance.
All that said Sam Elliott ... Read More:
