VHS : Sleeping Beauty [Disney 1959]
This is my favourite Disney movie. The backgrounds are detailed and stylised like a series of medieval tapestries. The intergration of the characters in what look like the best sets ever designed for a semi-swashbuckling musical/comedy/thriller is stunning.
I still get frightened when the fire goes out and Maleficent appears to tempt Aurora through the back of the fireplace (Maleficent being a truly evil villainess). The score is superbly used in these scenes. Brilliant stuff.

2.My Fair Lady [1965] starring: Audrey Hepburn, Rex Harrison, Stanley Holloway, Wilfrid Hyde-White, Gladys Cooper

VHS : My Fair Lady [1965]
The title says it all, I think and the reviewer who considers it classist and misogynist has obviously failed to see the point of the movie which actually makes fun of these attitudes. Remember the scene at Mrs. Higgin's house or Alfred P. Doolite's remarks on 'middle-class morality' - hardly narrow-minded.

3.The Music Man [1962] starring: Robert Preston, Shirley Jones, Buddy Hackett, Hermione Gingold, Paul Ford

I loved this film as a child and after having my son I played the soundtrack to him, he loved it. He has been sung to sleep so many times with Marion the Librarian and Pick-a-little Talk-a-little. Now he brings the video to me from the cupboard and we dance to Gary Indiana, march and play to 76 trombones and bounce when the Wells Fargo wagon comes to town. I'm sure we'll be singing along with the Buffalo Bills as soon as he can talk. Buy this film it will delight from start to finish

Gimmicky, disjionted, over reliant on this new gadgetry which was suddenly very appealing to a fast growing consumerist society, it has far less of the essence of James Bond as in the Flemming novels than previous Bond movies. It has things in it that make it memorable, but its biggest fault was to take us down the 'wealthy mad man with a fiendish weapon of mass destruction tucked away in a holed out volcano, with a couple of hundred uniformed henchmen-cum-mercenaries happily working for him' storyline, the kind of stuff which gave Mike Myers so much material with which to ridicule the formula. It is only Pussy Galore that stops me giving this movie the dreaded one star treatment. Really, this was not the path to take our beloved 007 down. You want a proper Bond movie? ... Read More:

VHS : Steel Magnolias [1990]
I have watched this film many, many times over the years and it's still as great as the first time I watched it. A superstar cast brings with it quality acting and a superb script. Don't think I've ever watched it without crying, so if you're a Steel Magnolias virgin, or coming back to it for a repeat viewing - be sure to have the tissues at the ready....
It also has one of my all-time favourite quotes, which is something I live by...
"I'd rather have one moment of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special" - simply beautiful!

Obviously if you like your no-brainer action car-chase movies, this isn't for you. If you want a simple story of lives and friendships, beautifully written and flawless performances, with depth and character - this is essential viewing.

VHS : Rachel Papers [1989]
This film is better than I remembered it. It's quite funny. Jonathan Pryce (Norman) is very amusing.

It has the advantage of not being formulaic. Perhaps its being British helped it to avoid a cheesy ending being tacked on at the last minute. However, perhaps because it is based on a novel from the 1970s, it is not what I would think of a typical "1980s British film". Oh, the hair and the music are quite 1980s, and it is definitely set in the past. It dates to the era when one could, like Charles (Dexter Fletcher) and Rachel (Ione Skye) go to an art gallery and see a TIDY bed.

The sense of place is more distinct than the sense of time. Our protagonist could almost be a younger relative of Hugh Grant's character in "4 Weddings": both charming Englishmen fixated ... Read More:
