VHS : Hobson's Choice [1954]
For those who didn't know, and I was one of them, a Hobson's choice is a free choice, but where only one option is really available. At the end of Hobson's Choice, a fine, vulgar, poignant and very funny film directed by David Lean, this is what Henry Horatio Hobson faces. Elements of the plot are discussed.

Hobson (Charles Laughton) is a prosperous shoe and boot merchant in the small town of Salford, England. The time is the 1880s. Hobson is a widower, a blusterer, a man accustomed to his comforts, his drink and his ease. He is, thanks to Laughton, larger than life, a man we can laugh at but not a man we'd probably want as a neighbor. He has three daughters. Maggie (Brenda De Banzie) is 30. She is, says her father, "a bit ripe" ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor At Sea [1955]
This film made me laugh from start to finish. The film is in the vein of the carry on film's type story line, without the campness. The story follows a junior doctor, Dirk Bogarte, who runs away to sea to excape a shotgun wedding and his escapades with the eccentric sailors and officers on board. The movie is well cast with excellent all round performances - especially from James Robertson Justice (Mr Scrumptious from Chitty chitty bang bang) as the Captain and Brigitte Bardot oozing sex appeal as a passenger. One of the best of the 'Doctor' series and well worth adding to your DVD collection.

VHS : The Pink Panther [1963]
When I first watched this film, I thought all the Pink Panthers were going to be the same, so I TRIED to love it, but I had to give in and accept that it was rubbish. I'm so glad that the other Pink Panthers were SO MUCH BETTER!

First, the biggining when it shoves the word MEANWHILE in your face just confused me and made me think it was going to go on forever like that.
Second, the jokes are just so not funny, especially the one where the egyptian lady says "Take your filthy hands of my ass-p" (Yeah right, ha ha).
Third, Inspector Cluoseau isn't the same character as he becomes in later films, he's more the 'person that keeps you from falling asleep'.

My conclution is: DON'T BOTHER WASTING YOUR TIME WATCHING THIS ... Read More:

VHS : Too Many Crooks [1959]
As above - When I watch this film and compare it to some the other more lauded comedies of the era, I find myself usually rooting for this one over several of the others. Its story is neat and compactly narrated, and the small ensemble cast is on top form, with each star complementing the other perfectly. It has some great comedy scenes which were actually quite influential, the runaway hearse being used as a getaway vehicle I think may be the first time this well worked scenario had been used, in British cinema at least. The characters are strong, and the interplay between them is fantastic. George Cole shows his acting pedigree with a sublime portrayal of a self styled 'Brains' behind a crime gang, made to look like a right Charlie by his own ineptitude ... Read More:

VHS : The Entertainer [1960]
Laurence Olivier stars as a sleazy, third-rate music hall performer in 1960's "The Entertainer", one of the first and best films of the so called Free Cinema movement, and a movie that is somewhat neglected today (it should be better known). Based on a play by John Osborne, Olivier plays Archie Rice, a mediocre performer in grim seaside town theaters. His shows attract few people (early in the film, we see passersby sneering at the theater marquee that falsely advertises Archie as a television comedian). His father, Billy, was once a talented and successful comedian, but now he is just a cranky old man living with him and Archie's wife, the unstable Phoebe. Archie has three grown children, played respectively by Alan Bates, Albert Finney and Joan Plowright, all ... Read More:

this has been rather unfairly overlooked compared to the inferior 1978 film.
whilst this version doesn't have the directing flair of hitchcock (his standards are difficult to equal), kenneth more is perfect casting as richard hannay. his charm, humour, sense of daring are a hundred times more effective than either robert donat or robert powell.
it is certainly kenneth more that carries the film. watch this version.
