VHS : Le Mepris [1963]
The other reviews appear blind to the fact that this is one of Godard's first forays into political metaphor.

The film sets a playwright with an interest in art for art's sake against an American 'movie' maker who ends up stealing his wife. Effectively, the woman caught between them represents European society - I believe. She is shamed by the behaviour of her husband who she feels allowed the US movie-maker to have an opportunity to take advantage of her for personal gain. In the end she leaves him for the American who she otherwise dispises because of that shame and in spite of it.

The movie which is set in Italy, I believe, is a metaphor for Godard's disgust at what some would call the 'revisionism' of mainstream ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor At Sea [1955]
This film made me laugh from start to finish. The film is in the vein of the carry on film's type story line, without the campness. The story follows a junior doctor, Dirk Bogarte, who runs away to sea to excape a shotgun wedding and his escapades with the eccentric sailors and officers on board. The movie is well cast with excellent all round performances - especially from James Robertson Justice (Mr Scrumptious from Chitty chitty bang bang) as the Captain and Brigitte Bardot oozing sex appeal as a passenger. One of the best of the 'Doctor' series and well worth adding to your DVD collection.

VHS : Don Juan [1973]
This film was one of Bardot's last on the silver screen. Teaming up with former hubby Vadim, Bardot who was then in her late 30's played a man-eating female Don Juan as both she and Vadim attempted to recapture their previous successes together. The movie itself was a flop though I felt that the plot and the acting were well delivered. Needless to say Bardot was in her element as the seductress devouring men after men and then spitting them out like "BUBBLE GUM"( which interestingly was the name of one of the songs she released in the 60's!). At times one gets the impression the plot was going in circles as much of it revolved around Bardot recounting her lascivious affairs to her cousin(a priest!), in the process she ended up in bed with him too! Despite ... Read More:

As a fan of french films of that period i found the film irratatingly pretentious. The characters are especially unlikeable (maybe intentional), the conversations between the characters just boring and the clanging noises throughout made my nerves jingle and my ears ring. it was a releif to get out the cinema.

Yes, there is an english-language version of the "TOBY DAMMIT" segment of this 3 story film. The IMAGE ENTERTAINMENT region 1 release has this as an option on the menu,BUT the quality of the audio track is so poor as to render it useless. It is not properly synched, it is muffled and there are drop outs where words disappear. It sounds like theres a car radio on somewhere, but if hearing Stamp speak english in a foreign language film is important, buy that version.

An entertaining piece of high camp french cinema (overdubbed in English). Good value at £3.99 but the picture quality is a bit fuzzy.

I don't know if inept, snotty Euro-Aristos actually went on safaris in the middle of the Old West, but if you can get by that particular set-up, the rest of the film is pretty enjoyable, with good action scenes, lovely scenery well photographed, and a likeable cast giving value for money.

There have been complaints that Sean Connery and Brigitte Bardot fail to Ignite The Screen--instead, they display a likeable, low-key camaderie as an indian scout and a titled Frenchwoman who's a lot faster on the uptake than most of her companions--crude sex appeal gives way to something more realistic and appealing. Bardot forgoes pouting and wriggling and is all the more likeable for it (1968 was also the year of her excellent cameo in the "William Wilson" ... Read More:
