VHS : The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie [1969]
This very rich confection is memorable and is more of a movie experience than a simple movie, because just as the all time great movies do, it grips you emotionally. There are faults you can find in it, certainly, but when it's finished you are still with it, and this has most to do with the affecting performance of Smith, which is intense, emotional and even a tad theatrical. It didn't follow the book very closely, its direction is quite stolid, you can't ignore the 'acting' of Maggie Smith, and some find the Rod McKewen song a bit intrusive and maybe even incongruous with the period of the film, but you remember this movie and remember the experience of watching it.

2.Romeo And Juliet starring: Patrick Ryecart, Rebecca Saire, Celia Johnson, John Gielgud, Michael Hordern

. . . and I didn't. Yes, I know, it gets all the plaudits, and continually features in favourite film lists, but my wife and I found it exceedingly tedious, and the acting both over-the-top and wooden (if you can combine the two). By OTT, I mean gushing and melodramatic. By wooden, I mean unconvincing and uninspired. We squirmed. The story is slight, but I know that's not the point. But, when it is so slight, you need everything else in place and for me - who has admired Trevor Howard in any things - it just didn't hang together. Sorry to be so frightfully stuffy, and all that, but it's an absolute stinker of a film.

VHS : In Which We Serve [1942]
There is a movie quite like this one, made later and a lot better, I recommend the Cruel Sea.

In Which We Serve is worth viewing, it is a propaganda movie from WW2 for a nation unsure of its future and in 1942 thisgs did look bleak for England and the Commonwealth.

The movie isn't bad at all but feels more like a play than a movie. It uses some footage but otherwise you feel like you are watcing a stage with a certain extent of overacting and stiff dialog.

The Cruel Sea was made after WW2 and is a better movie in all respects, both are B/W but the Cruel Sea covers a larger time frame and covers the rather inglorious but very important convoy duties. The characters are more believable as is their situation. Otherwise the ... Read More:

VHS : Staying On [1980]
The essence of the traumas surrounding the expatriate exodus from newly-independent Far Eastern countries in the late '40s and '50s is vividly captured in this absolute gem, all filmed in the beautiful high country of India. The casting and performances of Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson - indeed of the entire cast - are on a level rarely encountered. "Staying On" is a timeless jewel in every respect.

VHS : Les Miserables [1978]
By far the best screen version of the book, and for a originally made TV movie (Hallmark Presentation), it blows away the theatre version which came out 20 years later starring Liam Neeson. Very moving, and the soundtrack does a great job of adding to the story. If you've read the book, do yourself a favor and watch this...better yet, buy it. If you've never read the book, after watching this adaptation you'll probably want to.

This quiet, unassuming film features a group of the best British actorsand actresses of the post-Second World War period. Celia Johnson alwaysgives an outstanding performance as Jenny, and her stay-at-home daughterrole with an overbearing minister father (Ralph Richardson) is neat, spare, and as effective as Julianne Moore as Laura Brown in the recent TheHours. Margaret Leighton, a marvellous actress who glows in every role sheplays, is Celia Johnson's sister who has been estranged from the familyfor a few years and reappears at this fraught Christmas, and reveals, after a tense reunion with Jenny the real reason for her absence, whichbrings the sisters together again.
