VHS : All This and Heaven Too [1940]
Based upon Rachel Field's wonderful novel of the same name, this film is a triumph. It is a fictionalized account of a notorious true crime that shocked Paris to its core in the mid nineteenth century.

A governess, Henriette Deluzy, magnificently played by Bette Davis, returns to France, having accepted a position to teach the four children of the Duc and Duchesse De Praslin. The Duc, played with intense, restrained passion by the debonair Charles Boyer, is unhappily married to a self absorbed harpy who cares not a whit for her children, but is obsessed with her husband. Her obsession is such, that she appears to be mentally unbalanced.

When Ms. Deluzy joins the household, the Duchesse resents her children's growing fondness ... Read More:

I first saw this at the cinema in the '60s as a young teenager, and thought it was fabulous, so added it to my Amazon rental list. How disappointing! I now find it slow, if not positively turbid. It now seems to be merely a travelogue with bits of dialogue inserted between shots of sunsets, palaces, mountains etc, together with overlong traditional song and dance scenes. In the sixties, of course, most of us didn't have colour televisions and hadn't been abroad, so these things were exciting. Today, they're tedious. The only really enjoyable aspect of this film is spotting the guest stars (doesn't John Gielguid look young!) Unfortunately, this particular version is on two discs, but you only get the first with Amazon rental. You MUST tick the ... Read More:

VHS : The Garden Of Allah [1936]
Strong 1936 drama about a rich but unfulfilled woman Domini Enfilden (Dietrich) who seeks her destiny in the deserts of north Africa and meets Boris Androvsky (Boyer) a Trappist monk who has deserted the order. The chemistry between the mature Dietrich and the young and incredibly handsome Boyer in his first starring role is excellent.

We also have Basil Rathbone in a sympathetic role as a friend, and the unforgetable C Aubrey Smith as a priest, with his magnificent features, they don’t seem to make them like this any more.

Fine directing of a timeless story with acting and dialogue that does not date

This is the first film where they attempted to shoot Technicolor on location, but unfortunately after a short time the ... Read More:

Following on from the first film, this one lost it a bit with no real changes. Yet again, Joanne (played by Shannon Whirry) is easy to watch and strips off lots. But if you've seen the first one then you'll feel this isn't as good. However, its still good soft adult action.

VHS : Intermezzo [1939]
This David O. Selznick film is a remake of an earlier film with the same name. Ingrid also played in this one so it is easy to get them mixed-up at first.

The story is a classic and has been told in many ways. A famous violinist (Leslie Howard) falls in love with his daughter's piano teacher (Ingrid Bergman). Unlike many movies where the couple cause each other trouble and force the other one to beg his/her way back into good graces, the situations are real enough that you feel that you are part of the story. You will have to watch to find out how they deal with feelings and act on them.

You can easily get wrapped up in the story and forget that there is quit a bit of beautiful music in this film.

If you find this movie as ... Read More:

Story aside, the characters in this film are so enjoyable to watch. The mother in particular. She steals the show thanks to her having the best lines of the entire script. Redford is totally believable in his role. Fonda, a little wacky, but nice to think people can really happily live like this. It is only the last 20 mins which seem to lose it as it starts to become a little dragged out. Still, it is a quirky romantic comedy which should be in every DVD collection.

VHS : How To Steal A Million [1966]
This movie was directed by Academy award winning director William Wyler, who directed classics such as; Mrs. Miniver, The Best Years of Our Lives, Roman Holiday, and Ben-Hur. It is also a pleasant surprise to see Audrey Hepburn team up with Peter O'Toole in this hilarious romantic comedy. Audrey is known for some pretty dramatic roles but this is one of the few movies that she played is a real screwball comedy. The plot of the movie is; Nicole Bonnet (Audrey Hepburn), the daughter of Charles Bonnet (Hugh Griffith) tries to steal forged Cellini (statute, a work of art) from a museum with the help of an art investigator, Simon Dermott (Peter O'Toole). Nicole is forced to take this risk because her father refuses to listen to her, since the forgery was committed by her ... Read More:
