VHS : The Hunchback Of Notre Dame [1939]
This film is great on all levels - the performances of course, especially a very young Maureen O'Hara before the studios removed the naturalness, the music, the sets - but what really stands out is the cinematography and mise en scene: you feel that this is what medieval Paris was really like. Scenes such as the one where Quasimodo brings a caged bird to Esmeralda, or when he leaps on to the giant bell - "she made me deaf" - have tremendous emotional power. This movie should be available for Region 2, along with other greats of the 30s such as the Lubitsch films.

VHS : Hobson's Choice [1954]
For those who didn't know, and I was one of them, a Hobson's choice is a free choice, but where only one option is really available. At the end of Hobson's Choice, a fine, vulgar, poignant and very funny film directed by David Lean, this is what Henry Horatio Hobson faces. Elements of the plot are discussed.

Hobson (Charles Laughton) is a prosperous shoe and boot merchant in the small town of Salford, England. The time is the 1880s. Hobson is a widower, a blusterer, a man accustomed to his comforts, his drink and his ease. He is, thanks to Laughton, larger than life, a man we can laugh at but not a man we'd probably want as a neighbor. He has three daughters. Maggie (Brenda De Banzie) is 30. She is, says her father, "a bit ripe" for marriage at her ... Read More:

VHS : Witness For The Prosecution [1957]
I'm not usually one for courtroom dramas-but this 1957 movie is different. What makes it so different are the stars involved- Charles Laughton is superb as the London barrister defending Tyrone Power of murdering a wealthy widow-Marlene Dietrich is Power's treacherous wife -Elsa Lanchester is Laughton's nagging nurse- Una O'Connor is also superb as the murdered woman's maid- Laughton & real wife Lanchester were nominated for oscars for this movie. After the verdict is announced there is a superb twist in the final 5 minutes of the movie.

VHS : Advise And Consent [1962]
If you're interested in how American politics works or doesn't, see this movie now. What a knock-out depressing, inspiring, convoluted, messed up, brilliant piece of work this Otto Preminger film is. Charles Laughton steals the show (his last performance?) as a sleazy southern senator. You won't believe the machinations these people perform in Washington. And while this movie was made decades ago, it's still has so much truth in it today--people set up to be scapegoats, corruption, politics like you've never see it before.

True, this is sometimes touted as a "gay" film because of the one senator who is blackmailed, though is at least bisexual, but the film is more about how the American system is put together.

A frightening, brilliant movie with ... Read More:

VHS : The Private Life Of Henry VIII [1933]
The Private Life of Henry VIII is great rip-roaring fun, racing through Henry's last five marriages in an hour-and-a-half (an opening caption explaining the first was too dull to bother with). More gossip than history, the performances are spot-on, from Charles Laughton's Henry, setting the benchmark for all other actors attacking the role, to the servants below stairs who act as an earthy chorus to the royal bedhopping. The wives fare pretty well, Merle Oberon making a strong impression in her brief pre-execution scenes as Ann Boleyn and Elsa Lanchester's outrageously comic turn as Ann of Cleves particular standouts. Impossible not to enjoy, why can't modern British period pieces have this much zest and be this much fun?

While there are many NTSC public domain versions ... Read More:

VHS : It Started With Eve
Deanna Durbin was always fabulous and on this outing has a nice script and fine support from Charles Laughton and Robert Cummings, making this one of her best. This film is warm, funny and delightful. Durban even gets to do a few beautiful songs that are worked into the story in a natural way. This is really a very funny comedy with many fine moments that will leave you smiling when it's over.

Jonathan Reynolds (Charles Laughton), an irracible, rich and socially prominent tycoon, is on his death bed. His son Jonathan Jr. (Robert Cummings) rushes home from Mexico with his new fiance Gloria (Margaret Tallichet) to see him before he dies, an event the papers can't wait for. But when the old man wants to meet young Jonathan's bride to be, she and her hideous mother have left the hotel ... Read More:

Remember those dreams where you were being chased by a dark baddie monster and as you tried to escape everything seemed to go in slow motion - like running through treacle? Remember how scared you were.

Remember those black and white surrealist films by Jean Cocteau or Luis Bunuel that depict the human psyche so well - that plays with light and dark and are masterpieces of psycho-chiaroscuro.

Remember how few movies could create a bestselling poster out of any single movie frame, for instance Yellow Submarine.

Watch this film NOW and you will remember its genius for a life time. You will never tire of watching it again and again. It touches something deep inside us all.

VHS : Because Of Him [1946]
The always wonderful Deanna Durbin turns this mix of comedy and music into delightful and charming fun. It was the second time she and Charles Laughton would work together, leaving us a memory of what makes the movies great. Durbin once more exudes that something special that made her the great star she was.

Kim Walker (Deanna Durbin) is a waitress trying to get her big break on stage and with a letter of introduction from the great John Sheridan (Charles Laughton) she might just have found it. The letter, of course, was simply an autograph Kim managed to get before Sheridan goes fishing in Maine. The author of the play (Franchot Tone) doesn't want her in it, even though she sets his heart in motion. When Sheridan returns earlier than expected and gets it all figured out the film really comes ... Read More:
