VHS : Jane Eyre [1996]
Whilst I thought this film started promisingly, it was utterly ruined as soon as the adult Jane (Charlotte Gainsbourg)entered on the scene. Not only could she not act; making the story flat and uninteresting; but she had no 'presence' whatsoever; there was no sense of anything going on beneath the surface; so it was inconceivable that Rochester would even have noticed her I am afraid I did not even make it to the end of the film; it was so passionless and I could not believe in the relationship at all. Don't waste your money!

VHS : The Cement Garden (Special Director's Edition) [1993] [1981]
...The story simply put is that a brother and sister try to keep the family together after the parents (specifically the mother) die.

Tied in there though are elements of ...how the addage that blood is thicker than water might well prove to be a damning rather than positive virtue.

The performances are storng from the main family members but the blot on the landscape is the sisters lover who disturbes their already disturbed little family.

He interacts badly is poorly drawn and seems much less real than the others which makes it difficult to feel any empathy for him.

This i sa film you need your brain in gear for but is well worth the effort expended on it

VHS : Love Etc. [1998]
The beauty of this film, as with so many other French films, is that it manages to stir up such a range of emotions with effortless ease. There is real comedy (such as Pierre's claim that "I,I-I-I" is not an adequate lyric for a song!),and also real desperation in Benoit's realization that he losing his beloved Marie to his best friend.Add to this the timeless setting of the lesser known Paris suburbs (this in itself gives the film an extra dimension)and you have a film that re-awaken's the need to feel raw emotion.

VHS : Nuremberg
From late 1945 to early 1949, the Nazi assault on Europe was brought to closure with a spate of war crimes litigation, collectively known as the Nuremberg Trials. As an absolutely necessary vehicle for making the world comprehend the extent of Nazi barbarism, it was, in a sense, anticlimactic. After years of total war, with all its attendant death and destruction, the deliberations and speeches of judges and lawyers in a big room can hardly be considered otherwise. NUREMBERG, released as a U.S. television miniseries, depicts the first of twelve Nuremberg Trials, that one involving the legal prosecution and judgement of 21 members of the Nazi hierarchy: Goering, Speer, Kaltenbrunner, Jodl, Frick, von Schirach, Raeder, Hess, von Papen, Doenitz, Frank, Keitel, ... VHS : Merci La Vie [1991]
An easy watch, not. Its timeline shifts unapologetically from late 80s to Occupation-era France and back again, with characters and themes spilling between the two. Just as one becomes accustomed to a (relatively) starightforward tale of Love In A Modern Age (infidelity, AIDS, collapse of the family model) MLV is shunted backwards violently to a period which defined Western Europe - and in which in its depiction earned the film a mixed reception on its French debut. Gainsbourg (as ever) and Anouk Grinberg carry the film, but there's a range of star turns along the way including a dark tour de force from M. Depardieu. Listen out too for Arno's franglais soundtrack - and spare some saline for the closing sequence, as Blier reminds us what lies ahead.
