VHS : Great Expectations [1999]
This edition is technically not great. The DVD mastering is quite awful and is very grainy indeed. However....

This is so good. Having admired David Lean's rather compressed version of Dickens' superb novel for many years and having endured the complete annihilation of the said novel in the abhorrent farrago starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke, it is an absolute joy to witness the sheer quality of realisation in this production. It vastly outclasses the other productions on every level although the Lean has great nostalgic charm and appeal. Relatively faithful to the novel, this is profoundly engaging. The acting is superb.Charlotte Rampling inhabits the character of Miss Havisham at a stellar level, evoking a sympathetic response ... Read More:

This is one of the best films I have seen in a long time. The plot is terrific and the acting outstanding. There is nothing about this film I dislike.
It persuaded me to read the book. It is worth 5 stars as well.

VHS : The Night Porter [1973]
This film made rather a splash back in 1973, though now it is hard to think why. The acting is first rate and the location filming in Vienna excellent, but the story is rather absurd in the end.

Dirk Bogarde plays the night porter at a good hotel in Vienna, who by fate meets again his ex-prisoner and girlfriend from (yes, you guessed it, the film having been produced by one Levine) a concentration camp run by the SS, where Bogarde was an officer of the SS who played at being a doctor.

I should say that the scenes of SS debauchery were far more reminiscent of the pre-Nazi Weimar period.

The film's plot moves on to show how Bogarde, by now reunited with girlfriend Charlotte Rampling, has to hide from his acquaintances of the past, ... Read More:

VHS : Hammers Over The Anvil [1991]
An award-winning film about a boy's coming of age in a small Australian town. Alan, crippled with polio, yearns to be a great horse rider like his hero, East Driscoll, played by Russell Crowe, a horsebreaker who lives alone but is pursued by every female in town. The arrival of Grace McCallister and her rich husband leads to an intense love affair for East and unrequited love for the young Alan.
This is a wonderful story, with everything you want from a film - including the chance to see Russell Crowes naked form riding a horse bareback...swoon. I have the region 1 edition of this disk, and though both are low on extras, it is a definate must for all Crowe fans

VHS : Caravan to Vaccares [1974]
But for a ha'penny of tar, this film could have been a cult classic. A few lapses in the script and directing made it an easy target for critics, and it was never even issued as a DVD. Stunning aerial photography of the Camargue, a cold-blooded murder scene backed by haunting gypsy Tsigane music, and a slow-burning romance between a stunning and youthful Charlotte Rampling and a charismatic (but unknown) David Birney. If you like Provence or value good photography, you will probably love this film.

VHS : Henry VIII And His Six Wives [1972]
From an early age I had an interest in the Tudors, and my parents bought me this film when I was still at school. I very much enjoyed it at the time - it seemed to encapsulate everything that was interesting about Henry VIII, his personal life and his six wives. The costumes and settings were inspiring to my imagination and that is something which I can still appreciate today.

Watching this film as an adult a few years later, I think it's good but I can't work up the same enthusiasm that I felt when watching it as a child. The depictions of the wives, which back then I found memorable and easy to understand, now seem cliched and almost cartoony. The pace of the film is faster than I remember and the drama quickly shifts from one wife to the next, without much ... Read More:

VHS : The Wings Of The Dove [1998]
Based on the novel by Henry James, `The Wings of the Dove' is a beautiful film both in terms of locations, story and acting.
Helena Bonham Carter plays Kate Croy, who after being taking on as a ward by her Aunt Maude, is forced to meet illicitly with her lower class lover Merton Densher (played by Linus Roache). When Kate discovers that her new friend Mille (played by Alison Elliot), a wealthy American heiress is terminally ill, she sets about enticing Merton to seduce Millie in order for Kate and Merton to be able to marry through the acquisition of her inheritance.
The cinematography of the film is simply stunning, especially the night scenes in Venice, the costumes too are beautifully made and in my opinion Helena Bonham Carter has never looked better; whilst ... Read More:
