VHS : Eraserhead [1976]
Why use a lot of words to describe a motion picture that visualizes the subconscious? Suffice it to say that this is still David Lynch's best. An oneiric odyssey, the sort of troubling, never-ending dream one can have when suffering from a high fever, in which the most bizarre and seemingly hopeless situations nearly drive one to despair. So far, I've never seen another film evoking that sort of atmosphere so well. Strange yet familiar. Archetypal. ERASERHEAD is a unique work of art, a milestone in cinema. Don't try to understand or explain this film, open up your mind and simply undergo it, visit the dream world while being awake. An exceptional experience.

VHS : Under The Sand [2001]
François Ozon's Under the Sand is a great departure from his previous films, trading the bold and over the top farce of Sitcom and the brash melodrama of Criminal Lovers for something much more restrained. As a result, this is a mature film about mature characters, shot in a low-key style that is beautiful, though unobtrusive; with Ozon's camera finding a sense of poetry and evocation in even the most mundane of objects to help further express the sense of grief and remembrance so central to the spirit of our main protagonist. To help convey this, the filmmaker instils his work with a lethargic mood, drawing on the silences of scenes and the physical and emotional distances between his characters to create something that is much more internal and ... VHS : Tremors [1990]
I love this film, I really do. This DVD copy however is dreadful quality far outstripped by my original VHS copy.
It looks for all the world like a pirate version badly recorded from a theatre seat.
It's not real wide screen but a bad approximation, it's grainy and over coloured, the sound is horrible and it's obvious that the distributor couldn't give a crap about one of the finest B movies ever released.
If this is the best that Universal can do to stop the spread of piracy then it's a sad day and it's obvious that they are not below stooping to the quality and rip off tactics of the pirate.

Come on Universal, give us a good quality well mastered version and I would happily pay more but don't foist this awful excuse on paying customers.

Although I read (and enjoyed) the book years ago, my reason for watching this film was the curiosity of seeing Rose Troche's direction - I've been a fan of her work with Go Fish and, more recently, The L Word. And I was very impressed - well scripted, well acted and excellently directed. Even the opening credits hooked me!
A tragic tale interwoven with humour, this film is a must-see.
