VHS : The Remains Of The Day [1993]
"Remains of the Day" will be regarded as one of the great film masterpieces of the Merchant-Ivory team, now tragically ended with the untimely death, earlier this year, of Ismail Merchant from cancer. Their films were the quintessential cinematic epics respectful of both the settings and characters adapted from both period and contemporary novels, blessed frequently with elegant scripts from their literary partner Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, and of course superb acting from their casts. "Remains of the Day" excels in all of these categories, as a spellbinding, faithful adaptation of the Kazuo Ishiguro novel, with Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson as the star-crossed would-be lovers and servants of the pacifist Nazi sympathizer Lord Darlington (James ... VHS : Superman 4 - The Quest For Peace [1987]
this film is a bad attempt to a superman movie but im sorry after watching superman 3 this seems an academy award winner this isn't as bad as you'd think at least lex luthor is back in this one and superman is fighting a super villian. so if you do buy this film make sure you have seen the third one first then you wont think this is as bad

4.Close My Eyes [1991] starring: Alan Rickman, Clive Owen, Saskia Reeves, Karl Johnson (II), Lesley Sharp

VHS : Close My Eyes [1991]
I'm a huge Alan Rickman film and quite like Clive Owen (not his films though, just his acting) and was disappointed with this. The story of an incestuous relationship just wasn't interesting enough to hold the film together.

5.Point Break [1991] starring: Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, Gary Busey, Lori Petty, John C. McGinley

VHS : Point Break [1991]
What can I say about this movie that hasn't already been said huh? Well here's MY opinion... I simply LOVE it, grrrrrreat action 'leave your brain at the door' flick with lots of guns, explosions, Gary Busey! and skydiving... yes SKYDIVING! which just for the record Patrick Swayze does FOR REAL (looks amazing!) and whilst the Reeves performs his bits in a studio (no CGI thank god!) on some machine somewhere it still looks fab!

Anyway, just noticed that many an other reviewer have reiterated what I was about to say about this well loved flick... in a nutshell BUY IT!!!

A+

VHS : Superman 1 / Superman 2 [1978]
I bought this boxset because superman is one of those classic films that everyone has seen in their childhood, but I hadn't for some reason,I had caught odd bits of it on tv before, but never sat and watched it. Now having two sons I thought it was a good time to buy it.Both films were much btter than i anticipated and not at all what I expected. This is not only an action film about a superhero, it's also about a young man growing up and finding his way in life.Unlike some films of it's genre, there is a good balance between the emotional stuff and the action, its great for all ages and should be in everyones collection, at this price you can't go wrong.

VHS : Somewhere In Time [1980]
I won't go into Somewhere in Time's worth as entertainment here - suffice to say that I think it's a wonderful film, adapted by the brilliant short story writer Richard Matheson from his own story and well worth 5 stars. But in this review I'm focusing on the technical aspects which I feel detract from the DVD.

This DVD (ASIN: B0000UM0OE) features a 'matted widescreen' transfer which works fine on smaller 4:3 TVs, but which looks awful on larger screen or widescreen TVs. I believe that every DVD today should be made in 'anamorphic widescreen' format so that the image is enhanced for viewing on a larger screen. If it's not then I think that the low image quality should be clearly marked in some way, as the lack of an anamorphic transfer makes a big difference in quality. ... Read More:

VHS : Superman - The Movie [1978]
superman the movie comes to dvd. one of the biggest movies of the 70's, this brought the dc comics character to the big screen. It runs for over two hours, taking most of the films first half to tell superman's origin story, and then once the character is established he has to deal with a plot from criminal genius lex luthor.

Coming back to this, which I hadn't seen in a while, I was instantly struck by the superb jerry goldsmith score. the title music really goes with the character. and christopher reeve who took the lead - an unknown at the time - was superb, making his clark kent and superman two totally separate characters. margot kidder is an excellent lois lane, feisty and beautiful. gene hackman is pretty good as lex luthor although he's not really the strongest character ...
