VHS : The Horseman On The Roof [1996]
This is a chase movie. It opens in the 1830s in Aix-en-Provence with the town en fête, Italian nationalists are in exile there plotting a return to oppose Austrian rule of Italy. An Austrian special forces team is sent to clip them. For all they drive in a coach and use flintlock pistols they are recognisably brothers under the skin with assassins from any modern movie, aided by their otherness (they speak in German). One Italian is executed but the second (a colonel of hussars and our hero) escapes and the chase is on. It is a chase across a world that has long gone, as if Flashman were pursued through Hardy country. The farming communities are beautifully observed; one can feel the heat of the harvest fields, one joins the communal tables, ... Read More:

VHS : La Reine Margot (1993)
If you want a night of blood, madness, dirt and sex...this film is for you. It is a great story but I just did not believe in the characters (with the exeption of Henry)and hence did not much care about their fate. This made the film unexciting. Yes it looks great and authentic but every character is portrayed as brutal and none come across as really likable which gives the film an unbalanced feel. You get to the point where you just wish they would all kill each other and be done with it. This is not light entertainment or a tale for the romantic at hearts. It does tell an interesting story if in a somewhat unconvincing and nightmarish way.

VHS : Nostromo [1996]
NOSTROMO is the BBC production of Joseph Conrad's novel of the same title. Set in the second half of the 1800s in the fictional South American backwater of Costaguana, the country's only resource is a silver mine owned and operated by a British entrepreneur. The indigenous people are exploited, naturally.

As the film opens, a local demagogue mounts a popular insurgence against the hated foreigners, during which spasm the mine owner is slaughtered. The storyline quickly moves forward a couple of decades when the owner's son, Charles Gould (Colin Firth), arrives with his wife Emilia (Serena Scott Thomas) to reopen the abandoned mine, make a fortune for the investors, and bring relative prosperity to the local labor pool. Charles is a benevolent ... Read More:

Over the years, you'd have been forgiven for believing that the combination of football and hooliganism is a purely English phenomenen. Not so! Fans of films like I.D. and Romper Stomper will delight in this murky and unexpectedly gripping story of rival Italian football fans doing what they do best, namely squabbling, bonding and hammering the living daylights out of each other. Surprising and mesmerising in terms, this film puts you in the middle of everything and refuses to flinch. A gem.

5.La Scorta [1994] starring: Claudio Amendola, Enrico Lo Verso, Carlo Cecchi, Ricky Memphis, Tony Sperandeo

VHS : La Scorta [1994]
The story centers around a number of very different men (and their families)...they all have one thing in common - their job. The job is to protect a new judge who is intent on clamping down on the mafia - in Sicily...not quite a regular 9 to 5 job and one which gives plenty of room to bring you to the edge of your seat. The score is excellent and adds wonderfully to the tension which just seems to build and build in a wonderfully non-Hollywood fashion that doesn't enable you to predict what is going to happen or when.

A great movie which is well worth reading the subtitles for...too bad its not on DVD yet - a VHS copy will surely get worn out as even knowing the story does not remove the impact that this movie has so there is a good chance you will ... Read More:
