VHS : Pinocchio : Special Edition [1940]
now it may be a classic, but i'm afraid i was really disappointed with this film. my 5 yr old was frankly bored watching this, it was very slow to get moving. the story line was not what i was expecting. the jimmney cricket / conscience was to abstract for him to understand in the way it was presented. and there was a terrible bit later on with pinnochio getting drunk and smoking cigars. that bit raised a few tricky questions.

what i had expected the main story line to be - pinnochio's nose growing long when he lied, occured only once for about 20 seconds in the middle of the film and never again.

we will not be watching this one again
sadly not enjoyable or educational

VHS : His Girl Friday [1940]
In terms of picture quality there are some unsatisfactory DVD versions of `His Girl Friday' but there is nothing wrong with this particular item (Columbia Classics CDR 19838). The film remains fresher than many old comedies and stands up to repeated viewings. It is sharply written, briskly directed, superbly cast and well played from top to bottom. Watching this is a great way to stay cheerful on a rainy evening indoors.

VHS : The Battle Of Midway [1976]
I first saw this film at its cinematic release in 'sensaround'. This was a novel seat-shaker device installed in some US cinemas. When the planes' engines turned over the seat shook; when the bombs dropped the seat shook; when the Charlton Heston coughed the seat shook. At the time I was amazed. But then again, I was only nine years old! After watching the video, I was stunned to realize that almost no new action footage was shot for this film. Much was borrowed from the (still fantastic) Tora, Tora, Tora -- including the B17 landing with one wheel down scene and most of the Japanese carrier take-offs. The rest is stock footage from gun cameras and contemporary WWII documentary material. To a nine year old this all appeared rather seamless. To an adult it looks ... Read More:

VHS : Pork Chop Hill [1959]
In the spring of 1953, a company of the U.S. Army was ordered to assault an otherwise unprepossessing lump of Korean real estate called Pork Chop Hill. It's only value to either side was as a chess piece in the peace talks at Panmunjon, which were stalled on the question of where to pencil-in the cease-fire line. The Americans had occupied it; the Red Chinese had overwhelmed it; and now Gregory Peck (as Lt. Joe Clemons) is ordered to take his 135-man company and re-take it. PORK CHOP HILL is ostensibly based on the actual battle, and a qualifier at the beginning even states that most of the names haven't been changed.

As the battle unfolded, I began to mentally compare the production with recent, outstanding, "last stand" epics, specifically WE WERE SOLDIERS and ... Read More:
