VHS : Doctor Who - Arc Of Infinity [1983]
The Fifth Doctor is the best, by a country mile, and this is a fairly solid story from his era. The fact that Gallifrey is involved always conjurs comaparison with Deadly Assassin, but apart from THAT one, most Gallifey stories are terrible! Considering the rambling tin foil epic of Invasion of Time, this is an improvement. The story also features Omega, last seen in Three Doctors. A close inspection of Three Doctors reveals that, apart from the titular trio of Doctors, the rest was pretty poor with Omega a ranting, raving loony villain in a mask.
Here, Johnny Byrne (Space:1999) contributes a story where Omega is treated in similar fashion to the space probe pilot in his screenplay for the 1999 episode "Matter of Life and Death", who also ... Read More:

VHS : Hope And Glory [1987]
One of the best film on WWII in London... and surprisingly enough not available in the UK (and not even in European format).
I first saw the film about 15 years ago and have now bought it for my daughter (it fits perfectly with the year 3 curriculum) and of course for me. I think we've watched it about 10 times over the last 6 months.
Moving and fun, don't hesitate to buy it.

This story has a terrible reputation, but it is actually watchable enough. Colin Baker goes all-out to show that his Doctor is going to be very different indeed from what has gone before and it is very brave to show an violently unstable doctor. This bravery could be said to have backfired, as in conjunction with THAT costume, Colin had two strikes against him in many viewers minds before he had even started a full season of his own. It's not a classic, but if you lower your expectations, you may enjoy it and - love it or loathe it - this is the very first story of one of the Doctors, which will always make it interesting in it's own way. whatever the quality.

VHS : Doctor Who - The Two Doctors [1985]
Always being a fan of when one reincarnation of the Doctor meets another, and being a fan of Colin Baker, I found this particular episode too tempting to miss. The story opens with Patrick Troughton and companion Jamie reasoning with a professor calling himself Distari - a man hell-bent on cracking the secrets of time travel for himself. There is a raid by persons unknown and the last thing Jamie sees is the Doctor being tortured to death in a giant container.

As this happens, the Doctor (Colin Baker) suddenly collapses in the Tardis, feeling himself weaken. The Doctor and Peri must find out what is happening before it is too late for the Doctor(s).

Set in a variety of locations ranging from a space station to Spain ... Read More:

This is a bit of a mixed bag of stories from 1986. By this time the original series had long past its peak and was just about ready to be rested. Colin Baker is a fine actor who gives good performances throughout these episodes. It's a pity he didn't have better storylines (and a better outfit) to work with!
The first two stories - The Mysterious Planet and Mindwarp are disappointing. Nicola Bryant's Peri makes her exit from the series at the end of episode 8 and it's all a bit of a mess. (She is later seen briefly at the end of episode 14).
The final two stories are a little better. Terror of the Vervoids is a fine suspenseful story, which for some brief moments brings back memories of some of the classic stories from the earlier periods ... Read More:

I never got to the cinema much as a child and could count on one hand how many times I went, but I do remember out of all of them, The Secret Garden moved me the most. As an adult, I rarely watch TV or films and have a low boredom threshold, but I can watch this film over and over and cry every time. Mary Lennox is played superbly by Polly Maberly and the film is one of those rare gems that is truly as good as the book.

VHS : Doctor Who - Timelash [1985]
This is probably the most harmless and innoffensive of all Sixth Doctor stories. Sure it is pure pantomime with the boo-hiss villain Borad tying Peri to railway tracks (or similar!) and a campy performance by sub-villain Paul Darrow, but the whole thing is made much more entertaining than your usual christmas panto by Colin Baker who looks like a blonde parody of Tom Baker and acts like Basil Fawlty, berating and belittling the enthusiastic and ernest Herbert at every opportunity. Herbert is an endearing English twit who turns out to be H.G Wells in a fun twist. All in all, colorful, cheesy pantomime, but harmless and highly enjoyable. It only seems to offend those who insist that Dr.Who must be a dark, serious, gritty, realistic space drama at all times. It never ... Read More:

Tom baker, argubly the best doctor is superb in this very atmospheric doctor who tale, and is partner by the best doctor who assistent Leela. This is not as action packed as an average doctor who story but it more then makes up for it in the character development of the lighthouse occupants.Children and adults will enjoy this both alike due to the atmosphere fear it creates and the suspicion between the characters creating watchable confrontations. This episode borrows ideas from john carpeters, 'The Thing' very well and is an essential in any Dr Who collection.

VHS : Doctor Who - Cybermen (Limited Edition)
OK let's get this straight: Attack of the Cybermen is not the very best Doctor Who serial but it is a far cry from being the worst and much better than any of the new David Tennant Cybermen stories or 'Silver Nemesis'. The ratings were actually good on transmission and Colin Baker makes an excellent Doctor here, having already made the role his own. The violence is refreshingly different and not OTT IMO (Jon Pertwee was not afraid of being violent when he needed to be and this goes here).

The continuity stuff is on the heavy side but it does not ruin the story or make it inaccessible to the casual viewer. It just adds a (slightly too thick) layer for those in the know.

One of the better Colin Baker productions (the man himself was always very ... Read More:

A Brilliant film and about as British as they come. Filmed entirely on location in the midlands (Nottingham) at the beginning of the 1960s it documents the life of Arthur Seaton (Finney) and the pure drudgery of the working week where all there is to live for is the weekends; a time to get down the pub and binge drink and, at every opportunity, get to bed his friend's middle aged wife, Brenda. Powerful performances by all the cast, especially Finney who plays the part of Arthur with incredible vitality. It demonstrates how even 40 years ago there were individuals who were unashamedly amoral and against authority of any kind. This film is a classic and a piece of social history.
