VHS : The Great Escape [1963]
An early war film before the use of special effects works by it's "acting". These were top escapists who weren't to be denied, how they actually succeeded was through ingenuity, except it came at a cost, namely death and recapture.
The Germans knew they were going to be tested but they hadn't the collective nous to thwart the impending break out/s. Very sanitary in it's portrayal as it lacks an edge apart from the final scene of McQueen trying to outwit his pursuers. Marvellous back drop and having Bronson being a tunnelman afraid of the dark/clostrophobic and the brains of the operation going blind shows how plans can almost backfire.
An excellent cast illuminates this War time drama, a deserved favourite!

directed by: Roger Jenkins, Philip Dudley, Christopher Barry (III), Kenneth Ives

VHS : Elizabeth R - Part 1 (1971)
The only word for this is sumptuous. From the first class acting from a galaxy of Britain's finest actors, to Glenda Jackson's stunning performance in the title role, to the glorious costumes and lavish sets...this dramatic depiction of a slice of English history has never lost its gloss and sheen or become tired and stale through the years. As fresh, intriguing and enticing now as it was when it was first shown.

It could teach today's film makers a thing or two.

VHS : Scream [1997]
Craven's "Scream" is a masterpiece, it can't be denied. The intricate references to previous horror-movie greats is fantastic and Craven voices his thoughts on the horror genre throughout the film through the character Randy, a movie buff.
There are many plot twists and turns that make for edge-of-your-seat viewing. I loved this film and I highly recommend it to any horror fan. I also recommend you buy the soundtrack - it's awesome.

VHS : Poirot - Agatha Christie's Poirot - The Murder Of Roger Ackroyd [2000]
Hercule Poirot is one of the most famous detectives in literary history. Yet, strangely, except for his portrayal by Albert Finney in the star-studded movie version of "Murder on the Orient Express," for a long time, there did not seem to be an actor who could convincingly bring to life the clever, dignified little Belgian with his unmistakable egg-shaped head, always perched a little on one side, his stiff, military, slightly upward-twisted moustache, and his excessively neat attire, which had reached the point that "a speck of dust would have caused him more pain than a bullet," as Agatha Christie introduced him through his friend Captain Hastings's voice in their and her own very first adventure, "The Mysterious Affair at Styles" (1920).
