VHS : John Grisham's The Rainmaker [1998]
I truly feel that this was the best adaptation of one of John Grisham's books. It was funny, sad and had endearing characters, the only bad thing to it was that it was very slow-paced, but what can you expect from Coppola. Damon and DeVito are a perfect team fighting against that corrupt agency, and Jon Voight was very easy to dislike. I found myself rooting for the heroes although I already knew how it was going to end. I could've done without the subplot about the scorned wife (Claire Danes), though. But the film as a whole was truly something special.

VHS : Anchors Aweigh [1945]
With this being the film that launched Frank Sinatra to major things for MGM, this proves to be a great classic musical that hits all the right spots. Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra play two sailors on shore leave and who both fall for the same woman. Cue some great song and dance numbers by the pair, together and apart. Kathryn Grayson is also excellent as the female lead with also some great songs to sing. Also, watch out for the much celebrated sequence with Gene Kelly partnering Jerry the mouse (from Tom & Jerry). All in all, an excellent film.

VHS : Gardens Of Stone [1987]
Touching and subtle film about the entertwining fates of a group of soldiers and their families and friends, with a real human touch. Deftly handled subjective views reflecting the 60's personal values in the era of the Vietnam War.

Coppola doesn't let the film descend in to patriotic mush, but handles beautifully the characters as they form a family of the likeminded with different views. In many ways this was a trip down memory lane, reminding of many a young soldier I have met. This film is a fine tribute to the memory of their youthful eagerness and the meaning of life as it unfolds in the choices made for and by them.

His friend Dennis (John Stockwell) agrees, since he's tired of protecting him from the goons at school. VHS : The Secret Garden [1949]
This is a wonderful film with Margaret O'Brien playing the character Mary Lennox.
I bought this film on VHS from a seller, the film kept freezing up though which was very annoying! It's out of print, but all the other Secret Garden movies are out on DVD, and so should this one be!
Please vote for the DVD release, the more votes the more likely it will go onto DVD!

VHS : Catchfire (1990)
BACKTRACK is unbelievably dopey. Its only redeeming factor is that Jodie Foster shows an eye-popping amount of flesh - and it's no body double. And what a great set of legs! That's why I'm awarding two stars, one for each gam, which just goes to show the sophistication level of the film (AND my review of it).

Anne Benton (Foster) is a "conceptual artist", which means, in the wacky Southern California milieu in which she has her gallery, she creates pieces using message board displays. You know, those where one line of illuminated text moves right to left across a long and narrow screen. Anyway, one night after experiencing a flat tire on the freeway, she witnesses a mob hit on the premises of an oil refinery. (For those LA viewers, it's the one just off the 405 south of LAX where ... Read More:

VHS : Long Day's Journey Into Night [1961]
Eugene O'Neill finished writing "Long Day's Journey Into Night" in 1940, but when he died in 1951 his will specifically stated the play was not to be produced until at least 25-years after his death. Because his widow relented and gave her permission for this "play of old sorrow written in tears and blood" we are left with this 1962 film and Katharine Hepburn's greatest acting performance. I first stumbled upon this film on late night television twenty years ago and I still remember staying up and crying throughout the emotionally devastating conclusion with the camera slowly pulling back from the family sitting around the table before a stunning series of emotional close ups of the doomed Tyrones.

This painfully autobiographical play is set on the long day and night in 1912 when the ... Read More:
