VHS : Thank God It's Friday (1978)
This is a fun movie, every bit as relevant as Saturday Night Fever in depicting the disco generation. Unfortunately the music here is not as good as in SNF's gripping soundtrack. Donna Summer is excellent as the aspiring singer getting her big break. Enough funny scenes hold the attention and it's perhaps a less sanitized view of the disco era than Saturday Night Fever, what with a transvestite shaving his beard in the men's and stuff like that. The actual disco here is much more impressive than in the other movie. Still worth a laugh or two.

VHS : Black Widow [1987]
You can just about forget everyone else in this film other than Debra Winger and Theresa Russell. This sexy film is basically a two person film noir shot in bright colors, some of it in Hawaii. It is filled with excitement and seduction. Both the leads are wonderful to watch, their chemistry magnificent in this Bob Rafelson (Man Trouble, Five Easy Pieces) film.

Debra Winger is 'Alex' Barnes, bogged down in a government desk job dealing with statistics. But when she sees a pattern of deaths that lead to the icy beauty Theresa Russell she becomes obsessed with catching a killer. Theresa Russell, who has used more names than Jason Bourne, is just as smart as she is sexy, and almost the entire film is one long seduction scene as Russell ... Read More:

i go through phases of collecting tons of movies by a particular actor or actress if i find them good nd for a while it was definately john malkovich. Others were, cary grant, james cagney, timothy spall and nicole kidman. However i wasn't as drawn to this film as i have been to many of his others. I appreciated the plot, i just didn't have a lot to relate to with the journey, and that's why its only getting three stars, but i do however think john malkovich is a tremendous actor!!!

"I seem to play men who are sort of imprisoned in themselves," Anthony Hopkins comments in an interview included on this movie's DVD. And although this adequately characterizes a mere fraction of his work, roles like that of butler Stevens in Merchant/Ivory's adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's "Remains of the Day," Henry Wilcox in E.M. Forster's "Howards End" (also by Merchant/Ivory) and even Thomas Harris's Hannibal Lecter, illustrate Hopkins's minimalist approach to acting, which makes him so uniquely qualified to play emotionally restrained men, locked up behind the walls erected by convention, trauma or madness. Thus, while bearing little physical resemblance to the real C.S. Lewis, atheist-turned-Christian scholar and bestselling author of the ... Read More:

Steve Martin is someone I find is a bit hit or miss, usually more miss (e.g. Pink Panther). Yet, ever since I saw him years ago in an unexpectedly funny/good film; "The Man With Two Brains", a 4 star movie, he's someone I've wanted to find funny more than he actually is. (Can't explain why, must be some sort of psychological 'imprinting' going on!)

Anyhow, in this flick, Steve Martin departs from his typical 'idiot' roles. And he delves into the darker side of his character in a clever and very adept way and delivers a strong and very worthy performance as a quick talking, street smart hustler who sees religion as a nifty business to scam and get-rich-quick from. As he says; "if God exists, why did he make so many suckers?"

He plays ... Read More:
