VHS : The Marriage Of Figaro [1994]
This version of The Marriage of Figaro will make the opera available for the appreciation of the average person in the street. English is used throughout with spoken dialogue.

Both the singing and dialogue are well articulated and one should have no difficulty in understanding what is being spoken or sung.

The performance is excellent and well produced.

In places it is a little vulgar, but then so was Motzart, and overall very funny. It belongs in the same category as the Whitehall farces but with the inclusion of some first class music.

In general this is a version not to be missed by any one other than those who feel that the operatic medium should be kept out of reach of the average person.

2.The Shell Seekers [1990] starring: Angela Lansbury, Irene Worth, Sam Wanamaker, Patricia Hodge, Anna Carteret

VHS : The Shell Seekers [1990]
With a strong cast, this tale unfolds from a gentle depiction of a middle class family to a poignant study of 'hidden' family values. The drama unfolds following the discovery of the true worth of a painting and sketches by their deceased father and hidden feelings start to emerge.

Angela Lansbury in particular is superb, with the film being a visual treat and a classy tribute to Rosamund Pilcher.

directed by: Bruce Beresford

VHS : King David [1985]
King David was the Alexander of its day, a critically reviled epic that was damned more for what it got right than what it gets wrong. Critics at the time were aghast at the violence and ridiculed the scene where Richard Gere dances through the streets of Jerusalem in a loincloth, but in actuality both are straight from the Bible and are considerably watered down: this David doesn't give his father-in-law hundreds of Philistines foreskins in return for the hand of his daughter, and the decimation of his enemies takes place safely offscreen. But the film's attitude to religion is strikingly grim. This isn't the cosy feelgood God of Sunday school but a vengeful, unforgiving God who orders genocide and abandons those He anoints. Both Saul and David ... Read More:

VHS : Evil Under The Sun [1982]
Campy characters, a Mediterranean hotel, and a sparkling murder mystery -- what more could this big-screen Agatha Christie thriller need? "Evil Under the Sun" is both goofy and highly enjoyable, although the martini-swilling, sunny atmosphere make the murder feel rather too... relaxing.

An insurance goof and a stolen gem send Hercule Poirot (Peter Ustinov) to "Daphne's Place," a palace-turned-hotel in a small Mediterranean country. He arrives on the same boat as famed stage actress Arlena Marshall, formerly Stuart (Diana Rigg) and her new husband and stepdaughter. Arlena turns out to be having an affair with boytoy Patrick (Nicholas Clay) -- and then she suddenly turns up, strangled on a remote beach.

There are suspects galore: her betrayed ... Read More:

VHS : Sparrow [1994]
For those people of a romantic disposition this is a film for you. The setting, acting and the scenery are classic Zeffirelli. The plot is overly predictable with too little conflict, and too much pathos. The story of the poor step daughter who meets the love of her life, looses him to her pampered step sister and is forced into holy orders is a tragic one. But it is also a one worthy of note because it recalls the position of vulnerable women in yesteryears society.

6.Foreign Body [1986] starring: Victor Banerjee, Warren Mitchell, Denis Quilley, Amanda Donohoe, Eve Ferret
directed by: Ronald Neame
Average Rating: out of 5 stars
