VHS : Who Will Love My Children [1983]
This is a film about a mother who discovers she has inoperable cancer and has to find good homes for all her many children. Her husband, though well-meaning, is a hopeless drunkard totally unable to cope or to help much. They live in a house far from town, somewhere in "Darkest America", I think Iowa or Michigan (not sure about that). The story takes one up and down, through all sorts of trauma and eventually comes up with as happy an ending as possible under the trying circumstances. The last ten minutes keep you guessing as it seems one child (quite normal save for mild epilepsy) looks like being abandoned alone in a state orphanage...this is a 5-star tearjerker and a half! Great film though and not schmaltzy at all, really, bearing in mind ... Read More:

This is a Classic Film make no mistake about it. Yes, it is slow but it is meant to be.

Is it a faithful adaptation of the book? I would say yes considering the source material. The book contains whole sections of intellectual pondering regarding the internal struggle involved in passionate love. These passages are unfilmable.

What we have here is a very European film dripping with cold sexuality and emotional torture. The Actors, the Director and all involved in this production should feel very proud of what they have achieved.

The Direction is confident and fresh. The performances are faultless. Juliette Binoche is truly a remarkable actor. Her desperation is beautifully played. I have to say that this is one ... Read More:

VHS : A Smile Like Yours
Mmmmmmm what good can you possibly say about a film that both bores and annoys in equal amounts?

"A Smile Like Yours" is the story of a happily married couple that are desperate to conceive and have a child. The wife sets out on a campaign of active seduction of her husband at the most inappropriate times and secretly take a sperm sample to her doctor for analysis. The husband agrees to enter a fertility clinic and after the cueing of many a "hilarious" scene featuring the extraction of sperm samples and internal examinations (oh how we chortled!) they are still without child. Adding to the problems is the beautiful female work colleague who seems intent on bedding the husband.

What we're not given during any of these farcical escapades ... Read More:

VHS : Cookie's Fortune [1999]
Says lawyer Jack Palmer to Emma Duval, explaining the fate of her long gone father, a man she was told years ago had died while doing missionary work in Africa after he'd left his family. "He died alright, about four years later, somewhere down in Alabama in a button factory accident. Seems the hole poker machine broke loose and fell on him. They say he had 273 holes in him before they could get it off."

After all that Emma and her friend Willis Richland have experienced in Robert Altman's Cookie's Fortune, it seems perfectly natural when Emma cries out in exasperation, "Willis, what is wrong with all these people?"

The important point is that they all are part of a movie of great ease and geniality. Cookie's Fortune may be a little ... Read More:

This is one of the best in the fine Catherine Cookson series produced by Ray Marshall. The story is less involved than some others, but it has more than enough twists and surprises to sustain an interesting narrative. However, its key strengths are a fabulous cast, and settings, costumes and locations that realise an historical authenticity rarely bettered. It is probably unfair to single out one actor from a stellar group, but Geraldine Somerville's vivid and engaging performance as the central character Biddy is outstanding. The music in this production is also a treat.
