VHS : The Rise Of Catherine The Great [1934]

Biopic of 'Catherine The Great' of Russia, starring Elisabeth Bergner as she, and Douglas Fairbanks Jnr. as the 'Grand Duke Peter', but ironically, it is Britain's Dame Flora Robson that steals this movie with one of her greatest performances. Looking extremely young and attractive, she plays the Empress Elisabeth with great authority.

Also stars Diana Napier, wife of Opera star Richard Tauber.

Well, if you have read the book, you don't need to come near this piece of hokum. If you haven't read the book on which it is based - Peter Straubs Ghost Story - then I suggest that you do.

This film is nothing then a second rate horror film, which notable for the use of Fred Astaire - who is halfway to decent. This film is so bad, that it literally stinks which kinda compliments the special effects.

VHS : Angels Over Broadway [1940]
This is a good comedy drama about a suicidal man named Charles Engle ((John Qualen) gets involved with a small-time hustler named Bill O'Brian (Douglas Fairbanks) who mistakenly thinks that Engle is a wealthy man. He hatches a scheme to get Engle into a poker game with his gangster friends, and persuades Nina Barone (Rita Hayworth), an out of work dancer in his scheme. Meanwhile, a perpetually lush playwright, Gene Gibbons (Thomas Mitchell), finds the suicide note left by Engle, and he comes up with his own scheme to save the suicidal man. O'Brien reluctantly agrees to become an angel in this little scheme that interests Nina. She agrees to offer her help to get enough money ($3,000) Engle needs to pay back his employer and save his life. The ... Read More:

I wonder if the director realised this film would still be chillingly relevant thirty odd years later.

VHS : Sir John Mills' Moving Memories
Jonathon Mills has put together a most charming and warm tribute to his father and his family in this short video. Anyone who has adored this acting family will certainly find this video truly entertaining. The clips of Sir John's movies are timeless reminders of this wonderful actor's greatness, and the family's home movies are poignant and delightful. I recommend this video wholeheartedly for anyone who loves British cinema and/or this incredibly talented family. I know I will watch it time and again, smiling all the way through.

VHS : Chase A Crooked Shadow [1957]
This ranks as one of the most gripping and suspenseful movies ever produced in U.K.. Richard Todd and Anne Baxter give off superb display of acting, maintaining the director's ultimate objective of keeping the suspense rolling without any clue or hint towards its final unravelling of the mystery. In fact, the famous Hollywood actor Douglas Fairbanks himself (Producer ?) implores the audience, at the end of the movie, not to reveal the ending to others who are yet to see the movie. The play of shadow and light, especially on Richard Todd's face, adds to the foreboding and eerie feeling. This is one movie, where the producers' usual pronouncement of audience being forced to sit at the edge of seat really holds true. A movie that is surely a must for any serious moviegoer's ... VHS : Dead Man's Curve
I found this film very entertaining. Although I thought there'd be a twist at the end it wasn't the one I was expecting.

You can't exactly 'warm' to the character's but Matthew Lillard is excellent as instigator and plays his role with his usual energy. Michael Vartan is also good as his room mate who reluctantly helps Lillard carry out the killing.

The film leads you first one way and then another until the final dramatic ending. Even though you'll think you've guessed it, chances are you haven't!
