Being a lover of Bacall and Bogart, it was a real pleasure to find the Dark Passage. I had a VHS version and quality wise it has that graininess I really like (which might put some people off) but it has a rough edge to it that, once overcome, is a real bonus. The DVD is a better quality picture, however the Dark Passage is a strange little thing. Seen through the eyes of the victim for 30 mins or so, it's not the easiest of Bogart films to watch (you might get turned off) and it does take a while to get into the Dark Passage but once inside you become glued. On the direction, it took quite some time for me to withdraw the very essence of what is at its core (which with hindsight is a pretty obvious thing). After I'd been inside for a while ... Standard 1944 sub movie with the correct mixed crew. They meet with the standard trials and tribulation. The added pluses for this film are getting to go to Tokyo. There they are to sneak into the hills and give directions to the Mitsubishi plant. (Using the Japanese language). Mean while back at the ranch appendix looms its ugly head and they have to improvise interments. Before you start getting blasé see how well the actors carry it off. Will they be traced down in the hills? Will the sub leave without them? Can the sub get out undetected? And is it over when the planes fly?

These two reasons have caused a rift between Hud and his traditional father, Homer, also enhanced by the premature death of Hud's brother in a car crash. The refreshing aspect of this film is the fact that it is not a conventional western. Most of the latter include gun fights, small burst of emotion from the heros when dealing with women, etc. However, "Hud" is different because its main storyline tackles the lack of emotion in one man, contrasted with the huge amount of emotion taking place around him. Anger, hate, fear, love, lust. Hud's seeming lack of sensibility prevails throughout the whole film, and there isn't a happy ending. The film just stops. ... Read More:
