I love this DVD and it is definitely my most watched drama. I hold it on a pedestal along with the BBC "Pride and Prejudice" drama. My teenage daughters were even won over by the series despite listening to me drone on about it for a few years before they watched it! And that was no mean feat! I have posted a short review of the novel on this site, but actually it was the DVD that I watched first and this inspired me to read the book. I actually prefer the slight alteration to the story as featured on the DVD (with author approval). I cannot recommend the DVD or book enough.

I have only seen the original production on TV, which was brilliant. When will this DVD be available in Region 2 format? A British production should surely be available in the UK format!

This was a high-quality production and pretty accurate historically, at least as far as I can tell from my reading of various biographies and other books relating to the British Royal Family. The only problem I had with this teleplay was its presentation of the character of Edward VIII, Duke of Windsor. There is one scene in particular, which shows him grabbing Wallis Simpson's backside, which is completely out of character for him. Anyway SHE would have bitten his head off if he'd tried anything like that with her in "real life", because she was always (despite anything else that can be said about her) very conscious of her dignity, as he was also...I suppose the filmmaker needed to "dramatize" what a selfish, self-centered ...
