VHS : To Sir With Love [1967]
This is a fantastic nostalgic film about a group of unruly teenagers and their suffering teacher( Sidney Poitier) in the 60's.An inspirational film which works just as well now. Look out for Patricia Routledge(keeping up appearances) in a small teaching role.Judy Geeson is brilliant playing the young lady with the crush on her teacher, and Lulu's film debut singing the main song,To Sir With Love is just plain superb,if you like musicals with a good story you will love this one.Suitable for all the family, I cant praise this one enough. To Sir With Love [1967]

VHS : North Sea Hijack [1979]
Given the restrictions between a book and a film this one is a fairly good rendition. i bought the book many, many years ago at a market and recently re-read it which compelled me to buy the DVD.

Roger Moore is perfect as the chauvanistic ffolkes and carries his characters confident arrogance well. if there is one draw back though and that is Anthony Perkins who i feel would have been better cast as the explosives expert (bad guy) as opposed to the leading bad guy.

that aside this is a really good film and could have been the basis for another roger moore series like the saint etc.

if you love old movies then you could not go wrong by adding this to your collection.

VHS : Eye of the Needle [1981]
I return to this film at least once a year, which may be thought a bit sad, but in fact is a testament to its dramatic force. In WW2 London, Donald Sutherland, an Abwehr spy and ex-Kriegsmarine officer, trusted by both Canaris and Hitler, "The Needle" (from his method of disposing of the unwanted...), is uncovered and flees to Western Scotland. On a small island are living crippled ex-pilot Cristopher Cazenove lives, drunken and resentful, with his wife Kate Neligan and their small son. The Needle wants to rendezvous with a U-Boat, in order to transmit in person to Hitler vital information about the likely invasion point in 1944 France.

There are a few weak points in the plot: by 1943-44, the Red Army was already pushing the Wehrmacht aside ... Read More:

This early version by a great director is well worth it especially at the current price (5.99) A mix of real animals and real people will always outdo an animation. The acting may be a bit stilted and the fake "Indians" may be non-pc but my 6-year old loves it amd for film buffs it is interesting to see Sabu in a fairly early colour film by a famous director

7.Chase A Crooked Shadow [1957] starring: Richard Todd, Anne Baxter, Herbert Lom, Faith Brook, Alexander Knox

VHS : Chase A Crooked Shadow [1957]
This ranks as one of the most gripping and suspenseful movies ever produced in U.K.. Richard Todd and Anne Baxter give off superb display of acting, maintaining the director's ultimate objective of keeping the suspense rolling without any clue or hint towards its final unravelling of the mystery. In fact, the famous Hollywood actor Douglas Fairbanks himself (Producer ?) implores the audience, at the end of the movie, not to reveal the ending to others who are yet to see the movie. The play of shadow and light, especially on Richard Todd's face, adds to the foreboding and eerie feeling. This is one movie, where the producers' usual pronouncement of audience being forced to sit at the edge of seat really holds true. A movie that is surely a must for any ... Read More:

this has been rather unfairly overlooked compared to the inferior 1978 film.
whilst this version doesn't have the directing flair of hitchcock (his standards are difficult to equal), kenneth more is perfect casting as richard hannay. his charm, humour, sense of daring are a hundred times more effective than either robert donat or robert powell.
it is certainly kenneth more that carries the film. watch this version.
