VHS : The Black Sheep Of Whitehall [1942]
This film is a joy from begginning to end. The attepts to rescue a kidnapped scientist never fail to be funny. Will Hay's perfomance as the incompetent head of a correspondence college who gets drawn into the plot is wonderful and John Mills gives great support. This is a film that anybody can enjoy, the humour appeals to all age groups and despite the age of the film it never seems stale.

VHS : One Against The Wind [1991]
This film tells the story of an Englishwoman married to a French count, who himself is absent in Latin America during WW2. She has medals from WW1 but gets involved in WW2 by operation of Fate, when she helps a wounded British Guards officer who has evaded capture after Dunkirk and has washed up somehow in a fashionable Paris cafe.

The film is said to be a "true story" and no doubt that is so, at least in essentials, though one has to be careful in thus believing everything so labelled (for example, many people believe "Schindler's List to be a "true story", despite the fact that it was based on, not a factual account, but a novel by an Australian writer of fiction).

This film, which I found a trifle dull, really, does ... Read More:

Hitchcock always used to say that he saw no point in adapting an excellent book for one of his films because if a novel was so good, what could he do to improve upon it?

As a result, in the 80 years since it's release there must have been a lot of disappointed people who have bought John Buchan's book on the strength of this film. For all intents and puposes, Hitchcock's version has become the one that all the others are judged on.

Robert Donat is superb as Richard Hannay, a man who ends up on the run when a spy, whom he had only met that evening, ends up dead in his flat. Hannay ends up fleeing to Scotland, determined to pass on the message about the 39 steps.

Along the way he picks up Pamela, another ... Read More:

I found this film by accident on a TV channel about a year ago and have been dying for it to be released on DVD. I am delighted that my wish has finally come true.

It is a wonderful tense wartime spy drama and splashes of comedy. George Cole turns in a fantastic performance in his first major film role and the casting is inspired and perfect.

This is definitely one to add to the DVD collection!
