VHS : Flying Down To Rio [1933]
FLYING DOWN TO RIO is truly a pioneering musical made when such films were in the developmental stage. Many critics say that the movie is camp - but it is SO ENJOYABLE. Camp or not the movie is one of my favorites.

Ginger and Fred look like they have been dancing together for ages. It is hard to tell that this is their debut as a team. Dolores Del Rio is beautiful. Gene Raymond is a real pro.

The film has a huge cast with some great supporting actors such as Franklin Pangborn and Walter Walker.

I recommend FLYING DOWN TO RIO without reservation - especially if you like old musicals.

VHS : The Towering Inferno [1975]
Due to an alleged stupid dispute between Warners and 20th Century Fox over who owns the UK rights to the Towering Inferno this magnificent 2 disc set is unavaible in the UK except on Region 1 import. But it is well worth the effort to get hold of one.
Beautifully packaged, with the main feature remastered and a host of fascinating extras, far to many to go into detail about on disc 2, plus a set of lobby cards, this is the ultimate Towering Inferno set and one that every fan of this classic disaster movie should own.

I was sorely disappointed in this DVD - the quality was very poor and as I have some of the videos, have seen some of the excerpts shown I know for a definite fact the colour is really disconcertingly poor. To me it was like a copy of an original.
Not pleased one bit. Jessie Cowan.

VHS : Silk Stockings [1957]
There are a number of good things about Silk Stockings, but there also is a professional finality about the movie that makes it easier to observe than to be delighted by it. It was one of the last of the big MGM musicals coming from Arthur Freed's production unit. It was the last musical Fred Astaire made as the lead. It was the last film directed by Rouben Mamoulian. It was based on the last Broadway musical Cole Porter wrote. Silk Stockings also was used to make a statement about the excesses some thought were ruining films and music...the advent of rock and roll and the technological changes in films with wide screen and stereo sound. It even takes a crack at the fashion for ballet in many musicals. You've got to be very clever and original to successfully ... Read More:

VHS : Easter Parade [1948]
Easter parade is an excellent film of its era. The plot is constructed cleverly to ensure that your interest is maintained throughout, no doubt to keep you guessing! The dance scenes are choreographed with skill and executed with the brilliance one has come to expect of a Fred Astaire performance. Judy Garland has a role which demands both a cheerful and sombre acting ability and this film is successful in displaying this talent. There is a wonderful moment with the restaurant waiter which creates a lovely humour to the film and gives it an overall well balanced approach to effecting your emotions and ultimately succeeds in leaving you feeling uplifted. I would highly recommend it.

VHS : The Gay Divorcee [1934]
Fred Astaire plays a dancer returning to England from a trip to Europe. At the docks he meets Ginger Rogers in an embarassing predicament. He tries to find out who she is, but she refuses to tell him, so he spends ages searching London for her before he tracks her down, and begins to charm her. Ginger Rogers and her dithery, much-married friend (Alice Brady) go down to a rather unrealistic and glossy Brighton because Ginger is attemtping to obtain a divorce. Astaire naturally follows with his friend, dithery lawyer Edward Everett Horton. she intends to spend the night with a professional co-respondent, and an unwitting remark by Astaire leads her to believe that he is the co-respondent, which puts her right off him. However, the real co-respondent, a little Italian, ... Read More:

In my opinion this is easily the best of the Astaire and Rogers films.

It follows the basic Fred and Ginger formula - boy meets girl, boy falls for girl but she doesn't return the sentiment, boy wins girl over with song and dance - but the thing that lifts it head and shoulders above the rest (yes, even Top Hat) is the perfect balance of comedy with the best song and dance routines the pair ever commited to film. There are no dud numbers, no tiresome sub-plots that make you want to reach for the FFD button, just one classic after another and some genuinely amusing moments.

I'll simply never tire of watching it.

VHS : Ghost Story [1982]
Well, if you have read the book, you don't need to come near this piece of hokum. If you haven't read the book on which it is based - Peter Straubs Ghost Story - then I suggest that you do.

This film is nothing then a second rate horror film, which notable for the use of Fred Astaire - who is halfway to decent. This film is so bad, that it literally stinks which kinda compliments the special effects.
