This magical remake of a remake works wonderfully, and not just because of the real-life husband and wife combination. Great direction, great editing, great acting, outstanding cinematography...yes, it's a matinee film, but it loses no points for that. Honest old-fashioned screen romance at its best - I think it's a shame it seems to have dropped off the radar. The leads are positively magnetic. (Well, it's true I find it hard to say anything bad about Annette Benning, but isn't the Pacific Isles segment truly dream-like? OK, I'm just fishing here...) Sigh...

Garry Shandling has a style of comedy which is totally different to just about anyone I've ever seen, the closest person to his style would probably be Billy Crystal, it's mild mannered, dry and a bit quirky too. I love the idea of this film, it's well put together and well executed with a good length without being too long. Basically an alien called Harold (Garry Shandling) is sent to Earth on a mission to impregnate a human woman and have a baby with her, there is just one small problem their race may look like Earth men, but they're missing something, I won't spoil it, but this leads to a good number of references to the problem and it's cure. Campy, innocuous sequel revisits doctor Murphy who's now gained fame and recognition for his ability to talk to the animals. This time around he takes his suddenly dysfunctional family on a vacation to the woods where he has the unfortunate task of trying to mate an insecure bear in order to save his habitat, and at the same time try to resolve his own personal issues as well. It's far from remarkable, but this so so sequel is far less crude than its predecessor with a likable performance from Murphy and a talented array of vocalists.
