VHS : Carousel [1956]
Regarded by many as the best Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, it still manages to pack a punch after all these years. Most people will probably already be familiar with the hymn-like standard 'You'll Never Walk Alone', but there are plenty of other gems here that are worth tuning in for. Fans of Frank Sinatra may recognise Billy's 'Soliloquy'. The scene on the beach where Gordon McRae belts it out is now a movie musicals' classic. My personal favourite is the beautifully tender duet 'If I Loved You', a song so loaded with the promise of romance and deeply felt regret all at the same time - surely (or Shirley??) one of the best love songs in any Broadway repertoire.
Another of the musical's high points comes with the opening 'Carousel ... Read More:

VHS : Going My Way [1944]
This film is truly wonderful to watch. Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald play wonderfully off each other throughout the film. It is easy to see why each came away with an Oscar from the film. It is a film that is much maligned, but for anyone who enjoys a film with a good story, top notch performances and the absolute pleasure of Barry Fitzgerald then buy this film and simply enjoy a film from an age gone by!

3.Leave Her To Heaven [1946] starring: Gene Tierney, Cornel Wilde, Jeanne Crain, Vincent Price, Mary Philips

VHS : Leave Her To Heaven [1946]
Gene Tierney, one of the most beautiful woman of the silver screen, earned an Oscar nomination for her part on this movie.
She is playing a beautiful, but rather confused woman, which is terrible jealous, of everyone or everything that may stand between her and the man, she loves.
She is trying to murder the little brother of her husband, and she is trying to do the same thing with her unborn child.
Gene Tierney succeeds to earn admiration for her talent, and it is really pitty that personal problems have forced her to semi-retire in the mid-50's. She could have given classic portraits of beautiful women in other films, as she does here. (She died in '91.)
Although it is a melodrama, and to some viewers it may seem rather dated, ... Read More:

VHS : The Glenn Miller Story [1953]
I first saw this film on TV 20 years ago and am very pleased that it has come out in a crisp DVD version. James Stewart gives a very watchable portrayal of the struggle and triumph of the famous American musician, while June Allyson gives a moving performance that shows that her star on the Walk of Fame is richly merited. The film contains some of Miller's most famous compositions like In the Mood - the climax of this in the film against the background of a German air raid is heartening as well as causing the audience within the film to cheer and applaud. A very enjoyable way to spend the afternoon (or later).
Highly recommended.

5.They Died With Their Boots On [1942] starring: Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Arthur Kennedy, Charley Grapewin, Gene Lockhart

VHS : They Died With Their Boots On [1942]
"They Died With Their Boots On" is a classic. It is has an energy all it own and it gallops unapologetically to its inevitable final. Errol Flynn gives one of his finest performances as General Custer and Olivia de Havilland is irresistible in the part of Libby Custer.

The history portrayed in "They Died With Their Boots On" might be pure Hollywood hokum but it is still the best film ever made on this subject.

In reality General Armstrong Custer was not a liked man. In fact he was hated by his troops and despised in Washington. During his years on the Indian plains Custer's soldiers suffered terribly under his despotic and inconsistent command. Custer made enemies wherever he went. The final battle at the Little Bighorn and ... Read More:

If you choose to buy this fim, and I recommend you do [the scene,in pouring rain, of a crowd becoming a mob, is particularly chilling], then be careful. Amazon do not differentiate between the different available editions and lump all customer reviews together.
DO NOT BUY the Delta Edition, with the title in Yellow and the garish blurred coloured picture of the 2 stars. This is a shocking production, worse than a pirate edition, made from a dirty, poorly preserved original, and duped onto DVD in the cheapest, grainiest manner possible. It may have been copied onto DVD from an old VHS original, it looks so bad. Another edition, with the title in Red, is a restored version, and so much better, with some glimpse of the sharpness of the original photography. ... Read More:

I have liked this movie since I was a child and was sceptical when the Attenborough version came out - but delighted by the result.

This is a great feelgood Christmas movie that I have now shown to my 11 year old who loved it. It has all the charm of a Christmas story and you really want Chris Kringle to be the real Santa. Which, of course, he is.

Putting the two versions together - The original has a much stronger start and the remake has a better court scene and final scene. Perhaps one day there will be a combined version.

In terms of picture quality there are some unsatisfactory DVD versions of `His Girl Friday' but there is nothing wrong with this particular item (Columbia Classics CDR 19838). The film remains fresher than many old comedies and stands up to repeated viewings. It is sharply written, briskly directed, superbly cast and well played from top to bottom. Watching this is a great way to stay cheerful on a rainy evening indoors.
