VHS : Now Voyager [1942]
In my opinion, compromise is the theme of the film. Charlotte doesn't end up with her chap, but she is infinitely better off at the end of the film than at the beginning.

It shows a succesfull cure to a mental illness. How uplifting that must have been in 1942. Before that, mentally ill characters in Hollywood movies were dragged screaming to asylums and never seen again.

It is my favorite fim of all time, and I would love to see it in a cinema to see Bette Davis' face 15 feet tall in a close up.

VHS : The Pirate [1948]
I first saw this film when I was a girl, and vividly remember Gene Kelly swinging from balcony to balcony, looking extremely fit and attractive! The whole of the film takes you away to another, far-off world, and you can forget modern life for a while. I absolutely love it and bought 3 copies for friends and family when it became available on vhs. I highly recommend it to anyone who is tired of the modern day violence and swearing in most films these days, as a wonderful light-hearted story which will whisk you away for a couple of hours of pure entertainment and bliss!

The title says it all, I think and the reviewer who considers it classist and misogynist has obviously failed to see the point of the movie which actually makes fun of these attitudes. Remember the scene at Mrs. Higgin's house or Alfred P. Doolite's remarks on 'middle-class morality' - hardly narrow-minded.

4.The Laurence Olivier Collection--Hamlet, Henry V, That Hamilton Woman, 21 Days, The Boys from Brazil [1937] starring: Laurence Olivier, James Mason, Lilli Palmer, Denholm Elliott, Michael Gough

VHS : Separate Tables - Plus The Original Theatrical Trailer [1958]

This is a movie centred around a marvellous story.

David Niven plays a 'fake' Major. This is because he hides a secret past which is about to become public knowledge at a small Hotel where he has been staying some time. He is 'sweet' on a 'spinster-ish' woman (Deborah Kerr) who's dominated by her possessive mother (Gladys Cooper) There are other stories within this picture, but the story between 'The Major' and 'Sybil' is by far the most touching and absorbing. There are some wonderful scenes in this, and David Niven gives an outstanding performance and gets much sympathy from the Viewer.

This film not only shows how cruel and judgmental people can be, but how the best can be brought out after their shame ... Read More:

The original and best!

Stars Margaret O'Brien, Dame Gladys Cooper, Herbert Marshall, Elsa Lanchester and Reginald Owen.

This bitter-sweet tale of grief and love features no less than three talented child stars of yesteryear. Some entertaining scenes as Margaret O'Brien attempts to out-do Dean Stockwell in a screaming fit!

An orphaned girl (O'Brien) is sent from India to England to live with her eccentric and reclusive Uncle (Herbert Marshall) whom she's never met. Hidden within the great house are several secrets - one, a disabled boy!

Heart-warming tale of childhood and innocence, and no re-make matches up to this!

Made in a mixture of black and white and colour.
