I guess I am a purist when it comes to the classics. I like the movie script to follow the original work which I am sorry to say this movie does not. From the first scene in the movie, it is almost like they took extracts from all of the book's events and rearranged the entire timeline. Some of the scenes never happened, others did not happen as they were portrayed, there are many lines in the movie which never were uttered by any of Tolstoy's characters and to me the choices of actors for some of the roles were very misguided. Who in their right mind would choose Henry Fonda as Pierre. Pierre was described all through Tolstoy's epic as being fat, slovenly, very large, etc., wide of girth. Though Henry Fonda was a very fine actor, they ... Read More:

A great Western with a complicated story, fantastic action and humour. For it's time time Fort Apache was filmed brilliantly with memorable music.

John Wayne is at his best with John Ford, and Henry Fonda is brilliant too.A must see for all fans of Westerns and classic movies.

Probably the best movie of this director: a true celebration of the legend of the American west. The movie tells the classic story of the gunfight at the OK Corral with sheriff Wyatt Earp: while it isn't historically realistic, it outshines ALL later attempt to do a more accurate version of the story. The reason is simple: Ford always said that "the legend is more interesting than the truth". Of course it's a Hollywood movie, and it's not a revisionist Peckimpah western, but it has interesting characters (even the lesser one such as the barman are believable and add some human touches), a solid plot, a great screenplay (don't miss the Shakespearean actor who wants to perform in a saloon!!!) and an EXTRAORDINARY B&W cinematography.

This R2 edition isn't terrible by any means, but the R1 "50th Anniversary Edition" is much better: better picture, better contrast and anamorphic, too. This film famously takes place in one room, and you'll be looking at just twelve faces and four walls for an hour and a half, so treat yourself to the better DVD - you'll be watching it again and again anyway!

VHS : The Chase [1966]
Arthur Penn has set the stage for a great social satire on various issues like class distinction ,racial bigotry, saturday night social revelvry, adultery and finally the failure of justice in a breach of the american dream in this taut drama set in a texan town on a warm saturday night .

Redford has broken from prison and a lot of people are afraid for themselves due to a freaky guilty conscience,as they have wronged him and fear revenge and this premise becomes a viloent circus on the american attraction to the glorification of crime and anti-social behaviour.

Fonda As Redfords wife and Brando as the sheriff is trying to find him before he can be slaughtered as a sacrificial lamb by the town people who need a show on saturday ... Read More:

I certainly enjoyed what is a comfortable if slightly predictable story, but as a film this one falls somewhat short of deserving its "classic" status, never mind its three academy awards, especially so, the award for best screenplay. Why? Well surely the mark of a truly great film is its ability to draw the viewer in, to remove the camera and allow the audience to immerse themselves in the scene, to become in effect, silent participants. The actors become "real" characters caught in a moment of "real life"; the artificiality of actors actually acting is lost.

Well you certainly don't get that here. The whole effect is rather like watching a stage play from way back in the stalls. The actors might play their characters perfectly competently, ... Read More:
