I would give this no stars at all. There was NOTHING beautiful about "life" for the Jews who went through the Holocaust. This is the most cynical, insensitive, arse-covering, insulting interpretation of the Holocaust ever to be produced. I hate it! And I hate that foolish Roberto Benigni for producing it.

VHS : And The Violins Stopped Playing [1988]
Is about how I would sum up this film, the story of which, although apparently true has all been seen before one way or another, only the subjects have changed in that the victims here are the gypsies when normally they are the jews. For that I have given it 1 star. There is little action in the film, too much lovey-doveyness and virtually everyone ends up where you'd expect them to in Auschwitz meeting Dr.Josef Mengele.Watching paint dry would have been a relief and can't agree with other reviews at all.

This mini-series is very gripping - as in the previous two reviews - I agree with wholeheartedly - you have to watch - you can't stop watching. Cheryl shows her true acting skills as indeed does Lee - you can enter into the story. I'm so glad I bought this video mini-series - even better if it was available on DVD. I enjoyed immensely! You won't be disappointed.

VHS : The Magnificent Seven [1960]
Whilst this probably isn't the best western ever made its certainly up there amongst the top flight. It was fortunately made a few years before 'A Fistful of Dollars', which changed westerns and what was expected from them.

Take the classic Kurosawa film 'Seven Samurai' (which is given its due in the opening credits) and reinvent it in the American west. Then add the staggeringly good cast of Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Eli Wallach, James Coburn and Robert Vaughan and what you have is a near perfect piece of Cinema. Some of these guys (like McQueen) were not the bigshots they would later become, but they are incredibly cool. Just a look is enough for these actors. For example, James Coburn hardly says a word throughout ... Read More:

VHS : Hayley Mills - Whistle Down The Wind / Tiger Bay [1961]

PLEASE NOTE: THIS REVIEW IS FOR 'WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND ONLY':

A truly lovely film, beautifully shot in black and white, and definitely an all time British classic from the early 60s.

Hayley Mills leads a marvellous cast of some very talented and 'innocent' children who mistakenly believe a criminal on the run to be Jesus Christ.

Perfectly scripted with some great dialogue after being sent to bed between the two sisters after discovering who they believe to be Jesus in the barn, and lots of 'typical' behaviour from children of that period, and from a time long gone... (more's the pity...) After viewing this movie, nobody should be under any illusion that children are better off with all their designer ... Read More:

7.One, Two, Three [1961] starring: James Cagney, Horst Buchholz, Pamela Tiffin, Arlene Francis, Howard St. John

VHS : One, Two, Three [1961]
Set just before the Berlin Wall went up and giving James Cagney's Coca Cola executive the impossible task of turning his boss's daughter's new East German communist husband into a model capitalist before daddy's plane lands and his chances of promotion - or even keeping his job - go out the window, One, Two, Three is mostly one of Billy Wilder's best comedies. Unfortunately it gets very loud and frantic in the last couple of reels as Horst Buccholz's performance starts to career out of control - quite ironic since the acting tips he constantly gave James Cagney throughout the shoot, combined with Wilder's dictatorial inflexibility, persuaded the star it was time to retire rather than carry on in a job he no longer enjoyed. As usual, Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond's script ... Read More:

VHS : Tiger Bay [1959]
Polish sailor Bronislav (Bronik), played by Horst Bucholz, has been looking forward to seeing his sweetheart in Cardiff's Tiger Bay dock area (the home place of Shirley Bassey, the British partly West Indian-origined singer). That young woman is living "loosely" and is not interested in making a life and home with the young seaman. An argument ensues and she is shot, the weapon being a revolver given to her by another lover...

The killing is seen by young Hayley Mills, a girl of ? maybe 11 (in reality, 13), who puts in a superb performance. John Mills plays the relentless detective for whom catching the criminal is all that matters. The young (20 or so) seaman and the younger girl form an attachment which is somewhere between friendship and romance but without a sexual ... Read More:
