VHS : Misery [1991]
On the one hand, Misery is an excellent film. Many - if not all - of the characters are well cast, and very true to the book.

However, it has far less depth than the novel. For example, the book being written inside the book/film actually has a great deal of reference to the situation the author finds himself in, obviously basing the book around his life as Annie Wilkes' hostage.

In summary, read the book first. The film is pretty epic on its own, but it could have been so much better with the addition of a few extra scenes depicting the content of the novel being written, which would have shown more of Annie Wilkes' persona and added a great deal of irony to the situation.

Still, buy it.

VHS : The Godfather Trilogy [1972]
I first saw these films when they were aired on channel 5 a while ago but only saw about half of the first film, all of the second and none of the the third one. So the incentive was there to buy them, after what i had seen of them i thought it would make a great addition to my dvds. I wasnt wrong either. Though to be honest i couldnt see some of my friends either watching them or buying them, as these films aren't mindless action and explosion fests. They take time to watch, literally and mentally. If you really want to get the best from them, set aside a night where you can watch them in peace to soak up the class of them directing, script, acting and story. They are completely different to the more modern gangster/mafia films. The time is taken for ... Read More:

4.El Dorado [1967] starring: John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, James Caan, Charlene Holt, Paul Fix

VHS : El Dorado [1967]
John Wayne plays Cole Thornton a hired gun who turns down a job to work for Bart Jason, as this would mean fighting his old mate J.P. (Robert Mitchum). In the end he fights with J.P. and Mississipi (James Caan) against Jason.

Essentially this is virtual remake of Rio Bravo, and it isn't as good. Mitchum takes the Dean Martin role and James Cann the Ricky Nelson role. However Howard Hawks was a great filmmaker and he manages to make this a worthwhile and very entertaining movie in its own right.

John Wayne is starting to show his age in this film. He was close to 60 when it was made, and Mitchum who was 10 years younger steals the film from Wayne. The kill or cure drunk cure for J.P. is probably the best scene in the film, and Mitchum ... Read More:

5.Thief [1981] starring: James Caan, Tuesday Weld, Willie Nelson, James Belushi, Robert Prosky
directed by: Michael Mann

VHS : Thief [1981]
This early Michael Mann (pre Miami Vice) movie took a impeccable dive into the mind of a thief (and the work) of a professional thief. If you like psychology, or maybe action intelligence, than this movie is for you. The movie features a major heist similar to the famous heist in RIFIFFI (1956).

James Caan (The Godfather), Robert Prosky, Tuesday Weld (Once upon a Time in America, Michael Mann and Tangerine Dream all combine forces here to great effect.
This is Caan's finest performance as Frank, a middle-aged jewel thief who is obviously determined to make a long-cherished dream come true: Retire from his criminal life, marry, start a family, and live happily ever after (the ageless crime plot - one last score).
He carries a photo collage ... Read More:

VHS : Action - Executive Decision, Eraser - Video Double Pack [1996]
Being an Arnie fan I bought this mainly for the second film, to add to my collection, but both films are pretty good. Steven Seagal isn't in Executive Decision very much at all even though his face is on the box, but it's a pretty good action film (maybe because he's not in it much) with some good mid air set pieces. And Arnie gets a huge gun that shoots through buildings in Eraser, so that's got to be good aswell. The kind of films you can watch over and over even though they're not Oscar winning material. A good little box set.
