This is the best film ever but try as I might I can not get hold of it for region 2. If anyone knows where or how I can find this film to play on my DVD player, here in England, I would be grateful.
Same goes for "My Beautiful Son" AKA "Strange Relations" in the American market.

This is one fast paced musical. The plot is silly but interesting for a bit of movie history about prologues, the musical numbers are great (By a Waterfall and Shanghai Lil are Busby Berkeley spectacle at its best) and the movie is stuffed full of good character actors. Watching James Cagney in this movie makes you wish he had made more musicals as he is as sharp and snappy a dancer as he is an actor. He and Joan Blondell get most of the good one liners and have very good chemistry. It is easy to see why they were teamed together so often.

Some war films show war is hell. This maybe true but ask any veteran what war is like and they'll ultimately tell you it's an hour of sheer terror followed by days of boredom. This is one of the few films to show you what military personnel do with their spare time. It also has a message- treat the men well and look after their legitimate needs and they'll look after you- something that many modern companies would do well to remember.

Ultimately it's about a supply ship in the pacific and "Mister Roberts" is the popular lieutenant who hates the captain and wants to see some action but because the captain knows this he won't let him off the ship. So cagney and fonda are set up for a clash of ideals. Add to this a laid back doctor and ... Read More:

This movie - the pluperfect example of the Warner gangster film - seems a better film today than at the time it was released. Directed with flair by Raoul Walsh, it moves at a cracking pace and is especially well cast with a gallery of Warner Bros regulars. Cagney dominates the picture with one of his most likeable and poignant performances, always full of humour and above all, humanity. The attention to period detail is outstanding and especially, with regard to its music score - a brilliant collage of contemporary popular songs woven into a marvellous dramatic score by that unsung genius, Ray Heindorf who also provides the knockout orchestrations.

The finale is pure magic, as Cagney dies in the arms of Gladys George, on the steps of a large ... Read More:

I just loved this film!
Cody was definitely on top of the world!
Gripping performance by Cagney, especially when he found out about his Ma's death. I laughed when he easily defeated the prison guards, even though they had batons!
Vic is a undercover cop who had to infiltrate into Cody's world.
The actor who played Vic was simply mesmerising. Ma was definately evil and i cheered when she died. It was obvious that she was going to die as power had gone to her head.
So unlike any of the other gangster films. The film's portrayal of the gangster world is more convincing than today's pathetic rubbish.
Watch it, you won't be sorry!
