VHS : Arsenic And Old Lace [1944]
Entertaining, but also contrived and overdone. Cary Grant's manic zeal is ultimately tiresome. NB Screwball comedies of the 40s are an acquired taste.

VHS : Down To Earth [1947]
Rita Hayworth sings and dances like an angel while playing the Greek Love Goddess, Terpsichore, in this musical/fantasy/romantic comedy (1947). Director Alexander Hall known for hits such as; Once Upon a Time (1944; Cary Grant and Janet Blair) and Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941; Robert Montgomery and Evelyn Keyes), recreated his 1941 movie with new stars and a musical theme. For many Rita Hayworth fans, this is simply fantastic as Hayworth rewrote her name as love goddess in the history of Hollywood. This is a perfect film which exploits the dancing/singing skills Hayworth; combined with sheer beauty, adorned in lovely costumes, extravagant décor in the company of charming chorus girls, Terpsichore comes down to earth from heaven as Kitty Pendleton ... VHS : Loving You [1957]
This is an excellent film. Elvis shows a vast improvement in acting ability from his first film. There is an excellent supporting cast, Wendell Corey is particularly good. The sets look good, the costumes are good and the songs are first rate.

Elvis plays a young man picked out to tour with a band around small town America and then hits the big time, a bit like his own story. He is being manipulated by his manager (well played by Lizbeth Scott), falls in love with the girl, get the girl and reforms his manager (just like real life!). And, you get to hear Elvis's bassist, Bill Black, speak! A silly story but just the thing to soothe the furrowed brow.

The DVD doesn't really have anything more to offer than VHS just ... Read More:

If you choose to buy this fim, and I recommend you do [the scene,in pouring rain, of a crowd becoming a mob, is particularly chilling], then be careful. Amazon do not differentiate between the different available editions and lump all customer reviews together.
DO NOT BUY the Delta Edition, with the title in Yellow and the garish blurred coloured picture of the 2 stars. This is a shocking production, worse than a pirate edition, made from a dirty, poorly preserved original, and duped onto DVD in the cheapest, grainiest manner possible. It may have been copied onto DVD from an old VHS original, it looks so bad. Another edition, with the title in Red, is a restored version, and so much better, with some glimpse of the sharpness of the original photography. ... Read More:

VHS : I Love Trouble [1994]
Julia Roberts gets second billing for this movie, as it was still early in her career - but even from this vantage point in her career, you could tell that she was destined for great things... and even the quib in the movie about her getting an Academy Award was stroke of brilliance.

This is a great movie with wonderful chemistry between the two leads - Nick Nolte and Julia Roberts!!! It tells a simple tale of two competing journalists who end up working together for the greater good. It smells of old movies gone by, with the same raw energy between the leads as compared with Tracy-Hepburn and Taylor-Burton.

It relies on the actors' talents and a great tapestry of a story - and all interact well, and lead to a great conclusion - which will ... Read More:

10.Suddenly [1954] starring: Frank Sinatra, Sterling Hayden, James Gleason, Nancy Gates, Willis Bouchey

VHS : Suddenly [1954]
Suddenly is one of my all time favourite films, mainly due to Sinatra's excellent performance. Sterling Hayden is as always Sterling Hayden, not much of a surprise there. Sinatra, however, begins the film with the portrayal of a cocksure hit-man who seems to be an ice cold control freak. Throughout the film, a cat and mouse game between Hayden and Sinatra unfolds resulting in Sinatra losing his cool. The cold blooded killer, slowly and bit by bit, turns into a deranged psychopath. This is certainly one of the most impressive performances I have ever seen in my life and shows what a fine actor Sinatra was. All in all, it's a fairly unspectacular B movie with not much of a story that turns into a nail bitingly exciting game of life and death between the two men. A must ... Read More:
