VHS : Greyfriars Bobby (1960) (Disney)
Having been to Edinburgh and seen the statue of Bobby, this film had some meaning for me. Film makers - including Disney - just don't make films like this anymore, probably because society has changed so much since this was filmed in 1960.

There is no violence, no swearing, the dog is real, and there is no animation or special effects - it's a sweet film that'll gently tug on your heart strings. It's innocence is so very touching and it's a classic example of the type of films my parents grew up watching and that I can now appreciate.

If you're a dog lover then it'll warm your heart, and if you want to show your children a sweet film that will show them a bit of history, won't frighten them, or teach them bad habits ... Read More:

VHS : The Maggie [1954]
An often overlooked Ealing treasure, this gentle comedy is filmed around the Crinan canal on Scotland's West coast, Glasgow and on the island of Islay, centred around the crew of a little Clyde puffer called "The Maggie".

A real "must" for anyone who wants to see a snip of 1950's Scotland... my kids thought it was great. MacTaggart (the puffer's skipper is a Parahandy figure... and there's the clue... if you recognise the name "Parahandy" from Neil Munro's books (and the later TV series) then you NEED to buy this film.

Funny, heartwarming (without being sickly-sweet) with a real sense of a Scotland which has, sadly, been all but lost. It's not all tartan and shortbread either... Glasgow is shown as she was: a dirty but thriving ... Read More:

VHS : X The Unknown [1956]
X The Unknown, directed by film buff Barry Norman's father, is a gem. Now available in the full uncut version, despite the low-budget special effects, the film still has the power to chill. It's a great idea, set in a remote part of the UK and does not pull its punches as children die or radiation poisoning, hands melt away before your very eyes, and a giant blob goes on the rampage ! The opening sequences, in which troops on training meet up with 'the thing,' are splendidly low key and imaginatively directed. One of the best of its kind and almost up to the standard of the legendary Quatermass 2

4.It Happened One Night [1934] starring: Clark Gable, Claudette Colbert, Walter Connolly, Roscoe Karns, Jameson Thomas

VHS : It Happened One Night [1934]
"It Happened One Night" is one of the most enduring of romantic comedies. Released in 1934, its black and white images are iconic - Gable & Goddard hitching is a classic scene, but there are many others from the film which have an unforgettable cachet. Set against the realities of the Depression, Frank Capra delivers a distinct feel-good quality; this was a film which attracted a huge popular audience.

Claudette Colbert plays a beautiful heiress who has married a lounge-lizard society type against the wishes of her father. Father keeps daughter locked up on his yacht while he pursues nullification of the marriage, but Colbert escapes and sets off on a bus ride back to her husband in New York. She has never done anything so independent ... Read More:
