VHS : Oklahoma [1955]
Someone needs shooting at Fox or who ever did the transfer for the region 2 DVD. Some how they must have found the oldest Mono copy of this film, with an aspect ratio of 4.3 rather than the wondeful cinemascope version with full stereo sound that is available in the region 1 DVD.

VHS : Bend Of The River [1952]
Bend of the River is in many ways Anthony Mann's `nicest' Western, but underneath the gorgeous Technicolor location work there's a darker side to Stewart's border raider desperate to reform and his relationship with friendly enemy Arthur Kennedy that threatens fireworks to come - and when they do, in the last 20 minutes, there's no problem in believing the depth of Stewart's rage or the relentlessness of his pursuit. Shot on many of the same locations as the even darker The Far Country, it's still terrific entertainment. Stepinfetchit's role is a little uncomfortable, but compared to the humiliation inflicted upon him in other pictures he's allowed a bit more dignity here than usual, closer to Hank Worden's Old Mose Harper in The Searchers than ... VHS : Winchester 73 [1950]
James Stewart's first Western was DESTRY RIDES AGAIN (1939) eleven years later he played the former army scout Tom Jeffords in BROKEN ARROW (1950). Directed by Delmer Daves, then came WINCHESTER '73. But it was Anthony Mann's WINCHESTER '73 that was given its public release first, which also revealed to the public a hitherto unknown harder-edged Stewart which was to continue with a series of Mann / Stewart Westerns culminating in THE MAN FROM LARAMIE (1955). Sadly they fell out in the early pre-production stages of NIGHT PASSAGE (1956) and never worked together again!

Produced by Aaron Rosenberg for Universal International. Fritz Lang had been originally earmarked as Director of WINCHESTER `73 but he wasn't available so Mann was chosen ... Read More:

VHS : Oklahoma!
It is easy to see why the Rodgers and Hammerstein estate wanted this stage production to be recorded for posterity - it is hard to imagine that anyone could do it better. While it can be difficult to do justice to a stage show on video, this one has been beautifully filmed. The cast, choreography and staging are all excellent. Hugh Jackman makes a wonderful Curly, and Shuler Hensley is impressive as Judd Fry. The fact that they used the leads to do the ballet sequence instead of the usual dancing lookalikes adds significantly to the show. The behind the scenes documentary and interviews with the cast and crew are a nice bonus. This version of "Oklahoma!" is a must for any fan of classic musicals.
